Excerpt from The Children of Charles I of England The Stuarts were of Norman origin, and tradition tells us that they were descendants of Banquo, the betrayed friend of Macbeth, to whom the witches prophesied "thou shalt get Kings, though thou be none." When Malcolm, son of the unfortunate King Duncan, returned from the Court of Edward the Confessor where he had taken refuge, and was raised to the throne of Scotland, he made Fleance, son of Banquo, Lord High Steward of his kingdom. From that time the family appear to have adopted the title of their office as their surname, changing it from Steward into Stewart or Stuart. Charles I's accession to the throne in 1625 was probably the most untroubled for over 200 years. Yet after seventeen years he found himself involved in a civil war that split the nation in two; he was later deposed, convicted of treason and publicly executed. Through an excellent selection of primary sources this book looks at the personality and policies of Charles I, and considers how far he was responsible for his own destruction. It includes not only written documents, but also paintings, coins and architectural drawings, which help to throw light on this enigmatic monarch and deeply private man. This successful volume in the Cambridge Topics in History series is reprinted with a full colour cover.

In January 1649, after years of civil war, King Charles I stood trial in a specially convened English court on charges of treason, murder, and other high crimes against his people. Not only did the revolutionary tribunal find him guilty and order his death, but its masters then abolished monarchy itself and embarked on a bold (though short-lived) republican experiment. The event was a landmark in legal history. The trial and execution of King Charles marked a watershed in English politics and political theory and thus also affected subsequent developments in those parts of the world colonized by the British. This book presents a selection of contemporaries’ accounts of the king’s trial and their reactions to it, as well as a report of the trial of the king’s own judges once the wheel of fortune turned and monarchy was restored. It uses the words of people directly involved to offer insight into the causes and consequences of these momentous events.
