Excerpt from The Chicago Medical Journal and Examiner, Vol. 38: January to June, 1879 Fracture of the neck of the femur is a subject of special interest to all surgeons who have had cases under treatment. Having had my attention called to this subject, I addressed a circular to quite a large number of the older practitioners, asking for reports of such cases as may have come under their observa tion. In response I received reports, more or less in detail, of 163 cases which are embodied in the following tabulated statement. One hundred and three of these cases are reported as having occurred within the capsule, sixteen as being both intra and extra capsular, thirty-six as extra capsular, one as a separation of the epiphysis, and seven as uncertain. Excerpt from The Chicago Medical Journal and Examiner, Vol. 50: January to June, 1885 I made a microscopic examination of this fluid, assisted by Dr. Tilley, but could not derive any definite information from it. It did not contain the Drysdale cell. Laparotomy was performed, the foetus and placenta removed without any difficulty or considerable hemorrhage. In order to make a cavity that might be drained well, it was considered best to remove the uterus, as the specimen will Show. The operation was done October 13th, and the patient did not rally, but died in about twenty-four hours. The patient before the operation was greatly reduced in strength on account of her protracted suffering. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Chicago Medical Journal and Examiner, Vol. 37: July to December, 1878 Many more such passages might be cited, and they would all contribute to make it clear that the view referred to of Dr. Brown Sequard has been correctly described above. The proofs of a localization; of function in the cortex of the brain, are of various kinds. I cannot go into these proofs, such as they are in detail, even if it were necessary, for it must be supposed most of those present are in a measure acquainted with them. Excerpt from The Chicago Medical Journal and Examiner, Vol. 47: July to December, 1883 Gentlemen of the American Medical Association Permit me to express my feelings of gratitude for the unexpected honor con ferred upon me at the last meeting of the association, and to cherish the hope that in fulfilling the duties of this responsible position, I may be sustained by your cordial co-operation. We meet here to engage earnestly in furthering the interests and ob jects of the medical profession. We have come together from all parts of our broad country, charged with these great responsi bilities. It is fitting to express here deep regret at the absence from our councils of delegates from the Medical Society of New York. Let us hope that this absence may be only temporary, and that at the next meeting every state may be represented.
