Every musical form has had an impact on the linguistic practices of our society. French song is a vector of cultural, social, and stylistic values. Throughout the world, songs in the French language are used in the teaching of French: professors incorporate songs into the curriculum in order to illustrate differences of register and linguistic variation, as well as to raise lexical or grammatical questions. As a form of popular expression, song is a genre that has, in recent years, become the focus of serious academic scholarship and criticism. However, few linguists have paid attention to French song and its linguistic uses. This richly illustrated mini-dictionary about French singers fills this gap by offering a collection of portraits of the greatest singers of the French language and how they have constructed the musical landscape in both France and the larger francophone community and the world as a whole. Through (re)discovering these classic and contemporary artists who contribute to the creation of the sonorous universe of the 20th and 21st centuries, the volume determines how these musical genres influence the French language and nourish our collective imagination. By plunging into francophone song, one can achieve a better understanding of the culture and the language of its speakers.

Standouts in the collection reveal the genre's capacity to explore the deepest fears of the human psyche, making manifest the anxieties of the times. The editors have meticulously curated works that not only entertain but also serve as a critical lens through which to examine the broader cultural and historical contexts from which these stories spring. The contributing authors and editors, hailing from varied backgrounds, bring a rich tapestry of cultural perspectives to the anthology, underscoring the universal appeal and adaptability of the horror genre. Figures such as Edgar Allan Poe and H.P. Lovecraft, whose work has defined and redefined horror literature, are presented alongside authors like Charlotte Perkins Gilman and Elizabeth Gaskell, who contribute uniquely feminist perspectives to the collection. This amalgam of voices aligns with notable literary movements, including Romanticism, Victorianism, and Modernism, providing readers with a comprehensive overview of the genre's evolution and its intersections with social and political issues. This anthology presents a unique opportunity for readers to engage with the horror genre in all its diversity and complexity. The name of Francis Poulenc (1899-1963) was first brought to prominence in the 1920s as a member of Les Six, a group of young French composers encouraged by Satie and Cocteau. His subsequent fame spread well beyond France, and he is coming to be regarded as one of this century's most significant composers. His compositions are heard constantly in concert halls the world over, and numerous recordings, including complete sets of songs and piano music, have been released. Books, articles and more than a dozen doctoral dissertations have discussed his music. Carl Schmidt's catalogue of Poulenc's works represents the first comprehensive attempt to list an oeuvre which numbers approximately 185 compositions written from his teenage years until his death at the age of 63. The Catalogue indentifies a number of unpublished works, and adds a small group of compositions to his musical canon for the first time. Each work, whether complete or unfinished, published or unpublished, is described fully. Catalogue entries list and describe all known printed editions (including reprints) and manuscript copies of each work. In addition, they provide detailed compositional histories based on numerous letters, documents, and press accounts, many of which have not been published previously. Russian interest in Poulenc's music, manifested in press runs exceeding one million copies, is also revealed for the first time.
