In the opinion of the author, the anonymous sixteenth-century playscript entitled "The Famous Victories of Henry the Fifth" is actually one of the first efforts by the young but spirited dramatist, William Shakespeare. Produced about 1586—when the still unknown playwright-actor was 22 years old—the play in question is neither poetic nor highly distinguished. But Professor Pitcher, an ardent Shakespearean scholar, here presents an interesting and ingenious argument for his belief that the unknown playwright was the Bard himself. The object of much critical disparagement and scholarly dispute, "The Famous Victories" covers approximately the same span of events as that in the playwright's famous trilogy immortalizing Henry of Monmouth. In its own time, it was considered exciting. "What a glorious thing it is," wrote Thomas Nash in 1592, "to have Henry the Fifth represented on the stage leading the French king prisoner and forcing him and the dolphin to swear fealty." Dr. Pitcher believes that Heming and Condell omitted "The Famous Victories" from their First Folio in 1623 because they felt it was not worthy of a place with the later, highly professional plays of Shakespeare, none of which contains such inexperienced writing. If Dr. Pitcher's line of reasoning is correct, his conclusion is of great value in dissipating some of the mystery surrounding Shakespeare's early years. For despite the play's slapstick and buffoonery, it shows that its 22-year-old author was no mere holder of horses at theatre doors, but was already well read enough among "rusty brass and wormeaten books" to piece together his story of "The Famous Victories" from the chronicles of Edward Hall, Raphael Holinshed, and John Stow. Certain to arouse violent discussion among Shakespearean scholars, Dr. Pitcher's book is the considered product of many years of thought and study. The text of the Elizabethan play concerned will in itself be of interest to students of the drama, and the possibility that Shakespeare himself penned its lines will lend an excitement to the reading of the scenes. Why do we continue to experience many of Shakespeare's dramatic characters as real people with personal histories, individual personalities, and psychological depth? What is it that makes Falstaff seem to jump off the page, and what gives Hamlet his complexity? Shakespearean Character: Language in Performance examines how the extraordinary lifelikeness of some of Shakespeare's most enigmatic and self-conscious characters is produced through language. Using theories drawn from linguistic pragmatics, this book claims that our impression of characters as real people is an effect arising from characters' pragmatic use of language in combination with the historical and textual meanings that Shakespeare conveys to his audience by dramatic and meta-dramatic means. Challenging the notion of interiority attributed to Shakespeare's characters by many contemporary critics, theatre professionals, and audiences, the book demonstrates that dramatic characters possess anteriority which gives us the impression that they exist outside of- and prior to- the play-texts as real people. Jelena Marelj's study examines five linguistically self-conscious characters drawn from the genres of history, tragedy and comedy, which continue to be subjects of extensive critical debate: Falstaff, Cleopatra, Henry V, Katherine from The Taming of the Shrew, and Hamlet. She shows that by inferring Shakespeare's intentions through his characters' verbal exchanges and the discourses of the play, the audience becomes emotionally involved with or repulsed by characters and it is this emotional response that makes these characters strikingly memorable and intimately human. Locating the Queen's Men presents new and groundbreaking essays on early modern England's most prominent acting company, from their establishment in 1583 into the 1590s. From its inception in 1874 down to the close of World War I, the widespread popularity of the Chautauqua movement constituted one of the most dramatic episodes in the history of American adult education. Started by two Ohio men as a summer camp or assembly to train Sunday school teachers in pleasant surroundings on Lake Chautauqua in Western New York, the project grew to university proportions on its home grounds and during the height of its influence reached out to over 8,000 communities, which participated by means of correspondence courses, lecture-study groups, and reading circles. Providing a free platform for the discussion of vital issues and a means of bringing good music to people who previously had had no way of hearing it, Chautauqua was a major factor in the "great change" which brought to the Middle West the cultural standards of the Eastern seaboard. In so doing, it pioneered in introducing into American life many new concepts and ideas, including university extension courses, summer sessions, a university press, civic opera associations, and group activities such as the Boy Scouts, the Camp Fire Girls, and similar youth movements. The influence of Chautauqua upon the pattern of higher education in the United States was also great, due mainly to the action of William Rainey Harper--one of Chautauqua's leading personalities--in practically duplicating Chautauqua's organizational structure at the then new University of Chicago when he was chosen by John D. Rockefeller to head that institution. In this connection Dr. Gould has had access to the uncatalogued papers of Dr. Harper in the Archives of the University of Chicago. The net result is a book of value to the serious student of American education as well as to the casual reader whose knowledge of Chautauqua may have been confined hitherto to the relatively unimportant "tent show" era of the movement.

Charles Algernon Swinburne's literary reputation rests almost exclusively upon his poetry, and though his critical writings were voluminous, they are usually slighted by literary historians. Examinations of Swinburne's aesthetic principles, too, are generally based upon interpretations of his poetry, though these may be as misleading as the discrepancies between other artists' principles and practices.
