DOWNLOAD EBOOKIn Ancient Marbles in Naples in the Eighteenth Century Eloisa Dodero aims at documenting the history of numerous private collections formed in Naples during the 18th century, with particular concern for the “Neapolitan marbles” and the circumstances of their dispersal. Research has thus made it possible to formulate a synthesis of the collecting dynamics of Naples in the 18th century, to define the interest of the great European collectors, especially British, in the antiquities of the city and its territory and to draw up a catalogue which for the first time brings together the nucleus of sculptures reported in the Neapolitan collections or coming from irregular excavations, most of which shared the destiny of dispersal, in some cases here traced in definitive fashion.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis work offers a new portrayal of Queen Maria Carolina of Naples as a woman of power with weaknesses and ambitions, and analyzes the Queen's actions, from her political choices to her alliance and betrayals. A careful examination of the period (1781-1785) covered by the diary shows that the daily life of the Queen and offers key evidence of her political acumen and her personal relationships. Recca cross-analyses unpublished personal documents, which include the integral diary and private correspondence. The book focuses on the political influence that Queen Maria Carolina wielded beside her husband, King Ferdinand IV, and the criticism that has been made by contemporary historians and intellectuals who have often tended to discredit the sovereign for personal rather than political reasons.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKIn this book, Leah R. Clark examines collecting practices across the Italian Renaissance court, exploring the circulation, exchange, collection, and display of objects. Rather than focusing on patronage strategies or the political power of individual collectors, she uses the objects themselves to elucidate the dynamic relationships formed through their exchange. Her study brings forward the mechanisms that structured relations within the court, and most importantly, also with individuals, representations, and spaces outside the court. The volume examines the courts of Italy through the wide variety of objects - statues, paintings, jewellery, furniture, and heraldry - that were valued for their subject matter, material forms, histories, and social functions. As Clark shows, the late fifteenth-century Italian court an be located not only in the body of the prince, but also in the objects that constituted symbolic practices, initiated political dialogues, caused rifts, created memories, and formed associations.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe topic of on site diagnostics for historical, monumental and vernacular architecture is characterized by a twofold difficulty, partially due to a sort of hiatus between scientific community and professional system. In fact, on one side universities and research centres produce advanced technologies, methodologies and procedures, but not always adequately disseminated among professionals and sometimes inconsistent with some relevant criteria, such as feasibility and cost-effectiveness. On the other side, professionals, in the field of on site diagnostics for historical architectures, are holder of a heritage, made of experiences and practice, which often is not enough shared and sometimes is contrasting with the limited possibility to evaluate and verify the professional training and certification system, which seems too heterogeneous, if compared to other high scientific and technical professions, as is the case, for example, of medicine or engineering. In this book the diagnostic experiences are described, though, for logistical reasons, often briefly, following a systematic methodological approach, according to three of the main steps for the knowledge of historical buildings: anamnesis, diagnosis and prognosis, obviously with particular attention to the specifically diagnostic issues (diagnosis), but framed in the preliminary diagnostic plan and interpreted in the light of the performance, prefigured in the preliminary stages and connected to the visual inspection. That is why this book regards not only some experimental, unconventional and innovative diagnostic surveys and diagnostic experiences, carried out on particularly valuable monumental buildings under the historical-architectural point of view, but also ordinary and simple experiences in the field of professional diagnostic practice, where, however, it was possible to apply the methodology and the know-how, acquired and systematized in the performance of the experimental diagnostic surveys, often included in wider scientific research projects. This book is not exclusively addressing the scientific and academic community, but it also pursues the aim of disseminating in the professional system a heritage of rather varied experimental researches and practical experiences, but methodologically oriented toward a culture, which considers the design of diagnostic plans as a regulation criterion for quality control of professionals.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKInvisible City analyzes conventual architecture in terms of the politics of sight, "the optics of power", the relationship between flesh and stone. It uncovers the connections between the bodies of the nuns and the walls that housed them, presenting the architecture of female convents as a metaphor for the body of the aristocratic female virgin nun.
