Mature larva. - Length I. 5 inch 5 slender, somewhat thickened in middle, the segments well rounded 5 on dorsum a broad greenish - yellow band, with a black line through the middle, edged by a little green 5 a narrow greenish-gray band between the dorsal and middle rows of spines, and a short band between the base of each dorsal spine and the next in advance of the middle row 5 these gray bands are Of irregular width and the edges are whitish 5 the spaces between the bands brown-black; the sides, from middle row to the outside of lower row, gray with a rust-red tint in the middle of this area, and below to feet a darker, or more brown shade of gray 5 the spines are rather slender, swollen next base, above this tapering to a small conical top, from which proceeds a straight bristle a few bristles about the sides, each from a tubercle, and standing at about 45 With the axis of its spine 5 the dorsal row are gray, the middle row gray tipped with rust-yellow, the lower row all rust color of deep Shade 5 feet black, pro - legs gray - brown; head sub-cordate, the vertices rounded 5 color dull dark brown in front, dull yellow at back, with many short black hairs. May I repeat that there is ample scope for the exertions Of all our members, whether they care only to form collections Of specimens, or prefer to devote their labours to the unfolding Of the life-histories or the study of the classification of insects? There is plenty of work remaining to be done even in the favourite orders of Lepidoptera and Coleoptera, to say nothing of the others that are not so generally studied or collected. It would be a valuable contribution to our store of knowledge were lists of the Canadian species of all orders of insects to be formed, and presented to the Society for publication and at the same time a revision made of those published some years ago. Excerpt from The Canadian Entomologist, 1898, Vol. 30 We are happy to be able to begin the thirtieth volume of the canadian entomologist by presenting. To our readers an excellent portrait of dr. James fletcher, whose name is a household word among entomologists, not only in Canada, but throughout North America, and in many parts of the world besides. Born and educated in England, Dr. Fletcher came to this country, when a young man, as a junior officer in the Bank of British North America, and soon began to devote his leisure hours to the study of insects and plants. Finding the work ofa bank by no means congenial to his literary and scientific tastes, he Obtained a position as assistant in the Library of Parliament at Ottawa. It was not long before his talents and attainments in botany and entomology became-widely known, chiefly through his contributions to this magazine and the annual reports of our Society. His first paper in the latter was an article on Canadian Buprestidae, which was published in 1878, while his first contri bution to this magazine appeared in January, 1880. During all the years that have followed no volume of either publication has been issued with out some valuable articles from his pen. In 1878 he became a member of the Council of the Entomological Society of Ontario, and every year since has been elected to hold some office in the Society, being four times vice-president, and for three years, 1886 - 8, president. In 1879 he was one of the originators of the Ottawa Field Naturalists' Club, the most successful society of the kind in the Dominion, and more recently he suggested, and by his influence and energy accomplished, the formation of the important Association of Economic Entomologists of North America.
