They were long-shot underdogs and if they were to survive, they needed a miracle. The armies of Islam had swept like wildfire into the Iberia peninsula. By the beginning of the 9th century, King Alfonso's Kingdom of Asturias was one of a couple of enclaves of Christianity remaining in Espania. It was the year 814 and King Alfonso II had just received word that Charlemagne, the Frankish conqueror and protector of the Catholic Church, was dead. Alfonso's small northern kingdom was no match for the Caliphate of Cordoba which had orchestrated a vast economic revival known as the Andalusian Enlightenment in the south. The sophisticated Arabs minted silver coins, printed paper, read poetry, funded massive libraries, reconfigured the old Roman trading routes and created a far reaching Islamic legal system. The armies of Islam were large, disciplined and well-armed.By contrast, King Alfonso's kingdom was a land of small farms with little in the way of urban culture, learning, industry or secular institutions. His people were resigned to a meager subsistence economy based on agriculture, fishing and herding. The standing army was small, but the men of Asturias were excellent horsemen and skilled at "hit and run" mountain warfare. The miracle they sought arrived with the news that the beheaded body of Saint James the Apostle was found by a wandering hermit in a Roman cemetery in Galicia. Alfonso's kingdom might now have the powerful protection of a patron saint. The local Catholic bishop asked King Alfonso to make a pilgrimage to the burial site to confirm the identity of the body and to grant royal protection to the shrine that would be built there. In time, the place would become the holy city of Santiago de Compostela and the path to it would be known as the Camino. This is the story of the first pilgrimage.Accompanying King Alfonso is his Benedictine confessor Father Julian who foresees how Saint James would unite the Christian kingdoms and help to drive the Moors out of Spain. Musa is Alfonso's foreign minister, born to an Arab father and a Jewish mother - he is a worldly traveler and is married to Doctor Ruth, a skilled herbalist and physician. All four characters are transformed by the inner journey of their spiritual pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. But Musa is skeptical about the beheaded body that was found in an unmarked grave with no clues left behind to identify it. If it is not the remains of Saint James, then who is buried in the grave? The First Pilgrim is an account of the aspirations of a nation, the determination of its King and the faith of its people. It is also a medieval detective mystery.

"The Camino Preparation Guido contains a wealth of practical information to help successfully prepare for what can be a life changing and enriching adventure. The combined experience of many long distance walkers has been distilled and presented in this little book. The focus is on the thorough preparation, not just training and a packing list--it also explains how to avoid many of the crippling issues that so often cause walkers to stop after only a few days or weeks. Since the time of the first edition, more routes have opened up although a number of places have not be reopened. As the COVID-19 pandemic persists the situation may change and new restrictions introduced. Look for up to date information from Camino Associations and other sites" --

Devoted entirely to the subject of what to wear and what to carry on a Camino pilgrimage—with tips and advice on how to create a lightweight backpack so you can walk comfortably without carrying a burden on your back. Learn how to choose backpacking gear and clothing that will work best for you, the route you take, and the time of year that you'll be walking. Examine the pros and cons for difficult gear choices, like should you use a poncho, or rain jacket? water bottles or backpack hydration system? a sleeping bag, or a sleeping sheet? And what about taking a mobile phone or other tech-devices? Consider the options, and decide what works best for your journey. You'll also find a "skin-out" packing list that includes the weight of each item—including weight estimates for picnic and snack foods; and for water (because these are typically the heaviest items in your backpack). Use this comprehensive pack list as an example checklist to organize your own Camino backpack. A Camino journey can strengthen the body and refresh the soul. But to walk long distances every day you should carry as little as possible. This is the book to help you do that.

Are you curious about the Camino? What is it; what secrets does it hold; where does it start and end; what are its origins; what to take; what preparation, training and equipment are needed to succeed? I've walked 6 Caminos and over 6000 km and can help you successfully prepare to walk ancient pilgrims pathways in Spain, Portugal and France. From the dozens of things to know, often learnt the hard way, I have selected the ones that will help you to successfully prepare and greatly increase your chances of reaching Santiago and collecting your Compostela . Time spent in preparation for your Camino is time well spent. It requires preparation on many levels, as it's not only a physical, but also a mental one. For many it will also be a voyage of self-discovery. I have encountered many people, blinded by enthusiasm, who were poorly prepared and likely to fail in just the first few days because they were fooled into thinking it was going to be easy simply just because so many people have done it in the past. The statistics are hard to match up between those starting from St Jean in France and those arriving in Santiago. On the surface it appears that less than 50% complete this long stage. It's not just about boots and backpacks, there is so much more to learn about clothing, hydration and the impact of repetitive walking on our bodies, let alone avoiding blisters. Having the wrong size footwear that doesn't allow room for your feet to swell is a common mistake and halts many in a few weeks or days. Another common mistake is having the wrong types of clothing.. There is also a packing list with indicative weights of the essentials! For many the Chapter on "Walking as a System" will explain a lot of what can go wrong; Chapters on free apps, maps and sources of practical information will be invaluableThe impact of COVID-19 on the Camino and the availability of accommodation is also covered together with details on where to find up-to-date information and travel advice.
