This is the third of a series of research volume of papers from the Business and Information Technologies global research network. The group includes 20 partners from 16 countries, who conduct studies on the impact of new information and communication technologies on business practice, industry structure, and economic change. The book presents a unique longitudinal and cross-sectional view of technology adoption and business practice across a diverse set of countries and economies. It appears that there are some commonalities with respect to patterns of technology adoption, but also significant differences across countries. Furthermore, innovative practices can arise in every country, and have the potential to be applied in other countries. The identical survey carried out in different countries enables benchmarking and accurate comparisons across those markets. It is also extremely broad in its coverage of business practice in terms of functions and performance.

The hospitality model called "Albergo Diffuso" (AD), or "scattered hotel," has been engneered by Mr Giancarlo Dall'Ara and described by The New York Times as a way of bringing life back to historic towns and rural hamlets by utilizing unused rooms for tourism. This "simple but genial" model devised in Italy in the mid-90's received an award from the UNDP for its sustainability, but despite the spread of AD's, no peer-reviewed books have previously been published in English focusing on this innovation. In this book, the author therefore begins by exploring the AD as a community-based hospitality model, examining both its pros and cons. He then considers conviviality, sense of security, and other factors that Hans Magnus Enzensberger referred to as luxuries of our time for urban dwellers. These represent the key pre-requisites a location must possess to be deemed suitable for this innovation. Next, investors and co-interested private, public and not-for-profit associations are provided with a structured framework to help them achieve a defensible competitive advantage by harnessing the economic potential of valuable, rare, inimitable and non-substitutable (VRIN) resources. The final section assesses the AD as a business model, evaluating various aspects at the heart of any business plan.

Management Information Systems (MIS) play a crucial role in an organization's operations, accounting, decision-making, project management, and competitive advantage. The Oxford Handbook of Management Information Systems takes a critical and interdisciplinary view of the increasing complexity of these systems within organizations, and the strategic, managerial, and ethical issues associated with the effective use of these technologies. The book is organized into four parts: - Part I: Background - Part II: Theoretical and Methodological Perspectives in MIS - Part III: Rethinking Theory in MIS Practice - Part IV: Rethinking MIS Practice in a Broader Context The Handbook provides expansive coverage of the discipline and a methodological and philosophical framework for discussion of key topics, before exploring the issues associated with MIS in practice and considering the broader context and future agenda of research in light of such concerns as sustainability, ethics, and globalization. Bringing together international scholars to focus on the theory and practice of MIS, this handbook provides a comprehensive resource for academics and research students in the fields of MIS, IS, Organizational Behaviour, and Management in general.
