Nanite technology from an ancient artifact has infected him. Now young Dalt hears and sees people from an earlier time. These are not mere recordings of the founders of his world but virtual humans stored in a nanite matrix now interfaced to his brain. These founders tell him the truth of his world, an uncomfortable truth. From the viewpoint of those founders, his world is a backwards place. It's a place where using unapproved technology means punishment by the Luddite Purists. Can technology help his people have a better life and really improve his world, or will its storehouse of information corrupt and pollute it? The inner dialog of this young man with the very ones who changed the world provides him answers for his future, but at the same time, he discovers disturbing questions about the past. He realizes he must search for the wisdom he needs to find the answers.

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • From the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature and author of Never Let Me Go and the Booker Prize–winning novel The Remains of the Day comes a luminous meditation on the act of forgetting and the power of memory. In post-Arthurian Britain, the wars that once raged between the Saxons and the Britons have finally ceased. Axl and Beatrice, an elderly British couple, set off to visit their son, whom they haven't seen in years. And, because a strange mist has caused mass amnesia throughout the land, they can scarcely remember anything about him. As they are joined on their journey by a Saxon warrior, his orphan charge, and an illustrious knight, Axl and Beatrice slowly begin to remember the dark and troubled past they all share. By turns savage, suspenseful, and intensely moving, The Buried Giant is a luminous meditation on the act of forgetting and the power of memory.

Of this long-awaited sequel to "The Forever King", "Publishers Weekly" says "this narrative interweaves present-day events and flashbacks to Camelot, recasting many Arthurian elements into a mythology that appears new while managing to employ all the classic touchstones. With its high-minded themes and echoes of the metaphysical thrillers of Charles Williams, this satisfying sequel lives up to its popular predecessor".

At the heart of this study of the history of the sword and dagger in Canaan between c.1550 and 1000 BC lies a catalogue of 190 examples, all of which are illustrated. The catalogue supports a detailed discussion of typology. Ten types are identified by their tang and hilt shape as well as their cultural influences from Egypt and the Aegean. A final synthesis considers technological and social aspects of the daggers and swords, usually found as grave goods, such as what they reveal about Canaanite burial customs, metalworking and contact with Egypt.

1. 1 Contexts The principal issue with which this monograph deals is the role of the hippocam pus in establishing and using representations of contexts for information processing. However, before this issue can be addressed directly, it is necessary to ask "what is meant by the word 'context' ?". The first answer which comes to mind is likely to be something along the following lines: "A context is a framework (or background) of information with respect to whieh more specific 'items' ofinformation can be identified and manipulated". This answer may be correct, but it begs a fundamental question. Why should it be necessary to subdivide information into specific "items" of information, and the more global backgrounds, or frameworks? This question is especially pertinent if we are thinking of information representation in the brain, since neuroscientists (or at least the vast majority of them) believe that the basic way in whieh patterns of information are encoded in the brain is as combinations of connections, selected in a variety of ways. Since both "items" of information and "contexts" are just such patterns, apparently differing only in size, it is far from clear why there should be a categorical division between the two. ! This question is relatively new in the neurosciences. However, in a somewhat different guise it has been alive for a long time, since the publication ofImmanuel Kant's Critique 01 Pure Reason.
