Excerpt from The Buffalo Range He has now come again, and a more welcome visitor it would be hard to name. There are three great travelers whom the Editor of this Magazine knows well, and whom at various times he has specially introduced to its read ers. The scenes of their explorations lie far apart, all of them being in regions heretofore almost unknown. No three men can be found differing more widely in personal appearance. Mr. Charles F. Hall, to whom it has been reserved by his own individual labor to clear up the mystery of the fate of Sir J ohn Frank lin and his associates - a task which had been vainly attempted by expeditions fitted out by the Governments of Great Britain and the United States - born, we think, certainly reared, in the Great West - is a man of large frame, with light hair, blue eyes, and flowing beard, a very Vi king in aspect; rather slow of speech - a man whom upon first introduction one would be apt to set down as the most ditfident person he ever met. Mr. John Ross Baownn, now Ameri can Minister to China, born in Ireland, but. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Preserves and Ranges Maintained for Buffalo and Other Big Game The American Bison Society, Which.had offered to furnish the buffalo for stocking the range, raised by popular subscription for buying the animals. Thirty-four buffalo were purchased by the Society from.the Conrad Estate at Kalispell, Mont., at $275 each; the Conrad Estate gave the Federal Government 2 fine buffalo (the herd leader and a cow), and Charles Goodnight, of Goodnight, Tex., donated.a.pair of young buffalo from his famous herd, but the male died before it could be transferred to the range. The female, however, was shipped to the National Bison Range at the same time as were the buffalo obtained from the Conrad Estate. The fence having been completed and a warden appointed, the 37 buffalo forming the original herd were shipped to their new range, where they arrived on October 16, 1909, and were turned out on the range the following day. In November 1910, 3 buffalo from the Corbin herd were presented by the Blue Mountain Forest Association of New Hampshire. For twenty years Dan O’Brien struggled to make ends meet on his cattle ranch in South Dakota. But when a neighbor invited him to lend a hand at the annual buffalo roundup, O’Brien was inspired to convert his own ranch, the Broken Heart, to buffalo. Starting with thirteen calves, “short-necked, golden balls of wool,” O’Brien embarked on a journey that returned buffalo to his land for the first time in more than a century and a half. Buffalo for the Broken Heart is at once a tender account of the buffaloes’ first seasons on the ranch and an engaging lesson in wildlife ecology. Whether he’s describing the grazing pattern of the buffalo, the thrill of watching a falcon home in on its prey, or the comical spectacle of a buffalo bull wallowing in the mud, O’Brien combines a novelist’s eye for detail with a naturalist’s understanding to create an enriching, entertaining narrative.

School opened early in Sep tember, and both of these good souls entered with enthusiasm into the work. During the first quarter they found it necessary to live nearer to the school; hence, they leased a small two-room. Cottage and one acre of ground adjoining the school lot. Later this was bought from S. W. Hyder for for a private home. Its im mediate dooryard is now occupied by the large locust tree in front of Hardin Hall.
