Excerpt from The Brownies Their Book S Brownies rambled 'round one night, A country schoolhouse came in sight; And there they paused awhile to speak About the place, where through the week The scholars came, with smile or whine, Each morning at the stroke of nine. This is, said one, the place, indeed, Where children come to write and read. 't is here, through rules and rods to suit, The young idea learns to shoot; And here the idler with a grin In nearest neighbor pokes the pin, Or sighs to break his scribbled slate And spring at once to man's estate. How oft from shades Of yonder grove I We viewed at eve the' shouting drove As from the door they crowding broke, Like oxen from beneath the yoke. Another said: The teacher's chair, The ruler, pen, and birch are there; The blackboard hangs against the wall; The slate 's at hand, the books and all. We might go in to read and write And master sums like scholars bright.i '11 play, cried one, the teacher's part; I know some lessons quite by heart, And every section of the land TO me is plain as Open hand. With all respect, my friend, to you, Another said, that would not do. You 're hardly fitted, sir, to rule Your place should be the dunce's stool. You 're not with great endowments blessed; Besides, your temper 's not the best, And those who train the budding mind Should own a disposition kind. The rod looks better on the tree Than resting by the master's knee; I'll be the teacher, if you please; I know the rivers, lakes, and seas, And, like a banker's clerk, can throw The figures nimbly in a row. I have the patience, love, and grace, SO requisite in such a case. Now some bent O'er a slate 'or book, And some at blackboards station took. Excerpt from The Brownies at Home That we require to make a Show. A third remarked: To make it grand A splendid team is near at hand; They Will not take a second lash Before the harness goes to smash, But, treated skilfully, Will glide As fast as you will care to ride. It matters not how hills may rise, Or how the snow before them lies, Once on the road, you may depend, They 'll strive to find the other end. When going fast the lines I '11 hold, More teams than one I have controlled While comrades trembled in their places With bristling hair and pallid faces. Another spoke: Excuse my smile; NO disrespect is meant the While. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Brownie I love Him! Was Brownie's emphatic comment; and she turned on her pillow and fell fast asleep. The next few days were very busy ones. Hester and Mrs. Eustace unpacked and tidied, and gradually made every room habitable. Two tiny sitting-rooms, a fair sized kitchen, two bedrooms, and a large attic were all furnished in the simplest style possible. Mrs. Eustace tacked down carpets, hung pictures, stitched breadths of chintz together for curtains and chair covers, converted boxes into couches, hammered up shelves and brackets, all with a rapidity and a light-heartedness that took away her faithful maid's breath, as she vainly tried to keep pace with her. Brownie and Buffy, in warm overalls, were turned out of doors a good part of each day. They were nothing loth, for though the front garden did not appeal to them, the piece at the back did. It was a long strip of grass surrounded by a low stone wall, and at the bottom were two apple trees, a cherry tree, and an old oak. Looking over the stone wall they faced a common, now covered with gorse and dead heather; in the distance, about half a mile away, was a cluster of cottages and the village church. But the chief delight in this old garden was a well. There it was, with its old wooden cover, and the handle to wind up the buckets, as they were let up or down. Hester, seeing the fascination with which it possessed them, had roughly railed a bit of grass off round it with some old hurdles which she had found in an outhouse, and she had forbidden them to touch either handle or buckets. But she could not forbid it forming a subject for their active brains to exercise themselves upon. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
