Excerpt from The British Critic, Vol. 35: For January, February, March, April, May, June, 1810 In {peaking of Charges and Difcourfes fiparately publilhed, our attention is forcibly called to that charge of the learned bif/jop of Glouccyler, Dr. Hun. Tingford*, vwhich completes his infiruetions to the Clergy, on the fubjeft of Ordination. In our goth Volume, we fpoke ofa Charge, which was entitled Preparations for the Holy Order of 'deacons; the prefent is a limilar 'book of infiru''tion for thofe who are about to receive the holy 'order of Priefts. Borh are truly worthy of the learning, piety, and abi lities of the Bitp, 'and ought to be fiudie'd with atten tion by every candidate. The Bifbop of Carli/le': Fey? Sermon 1' is full of excellent advice, highly adapted to the necefiities of the time. Walker': Sermon, after the funeral of Bifhop Strachan contains much more than foch a difcourfe can ufually comprehend the hillorical View of an Apoftolical Church, with an elucidation of the principles and conduct of its rulers. On the celebration of the royal Jubilee, we have perufed feveral very good difcourfes; but among them we ought undoubtedly to diflinguilh that of the Principal of Marifchall College, Aberdeen, Dr. Brown When we meet fo old a friend, we are happy to find him unchanged in principles and powers. Jlrlr. Archdeacon Daubeny'r Sermon at St. Paul's n, fug geit's fonie very important cautions on the fubjefi of general education; and the apprehenfions which he expreites on the incroachments of latitudinarian fyftems, are fuch as no man can treat with levity, who is not himfclf infected with religious indifference. Other Difcourfes have been noticed, which might be mentioned here; but we 'mufi: always fet bounds to an enumeration which, though pleafing to ourfelves, might to our readers appear tedious. Excerpt from The British Critic, Quarterly Theological Review, and Ecclesiastical Record, Vol. 13: January, 1833 It is not forgotten by us, that we inflicted on the public a some what unmerciful extent of disquisition, in our remarks on the first of Dr. N area's three gigantic tomes; and we do grievously ap prehend that gods, and men, and columns, may be thrown into resentful commotion by a repetition of the experiment. We therefore commence our task with a virtuous resolution to resist; as much as possible, the excursive propensity. The events and the periods, indeed, which Dr. N ares has undertaken to illustrate, are full of temptation. There must be a strange apathy in the mind which does not feel itself seduced to take its pastime in that vast ocean of historical inquiry.
