Excerpt from Won in the Ninth: The First of a Series of Stories for Boys on Sports to Be Known as the Matty Books "Eyah! Eyah! Hughie, Rah-Rah." A wiry red-haired boy about twenty-three years old swung lightly from the train with a big valise in his hand into a crowd of college boys in caps and heavy ulsters. They gathered round him at once, and while one crowd took charge of his valise, he was lifted on to the shoulders of a half dozen fellows and carried through the streets to his rooms in Elihu Dormitory. In a twinkling his rooms and the halls outside were blocked with the lads of Lowell who had come to welcome the most popular boy in school, Hughie Jenkins. It was the day of the opening of the winter term of the University. Hughie Jenkins had been the successful manager for three years of the College Baseball team and on the Thanksgiving Day previous, Hughie as Captain of the Football Eleven, with the help of the other members of the team, had won the College Championship for the first time in five years. Excerpt from Boys Own Book of Sports, Birds, and Animals Our little volume describes the most popular amusements, and will undoubtedly suggest to most of its juvenile readers some sports with which they were previously unacquainted. We have confined ourselves to those sports which prevail in our own country - those which all may participate in, with out inconvenien'ce; believing it to be quite superfluous to give any account of those which are wholly foreign and nu practised by American boys. Excerpt from The Sports and Pastimes of American Boys: A Guide and d104-Book of Games of the Play-Ground, the Parlor, and the Field, Adapted Especially for American Youth OW that the spirit of the age favors the plan of a judicious combination of physical recreation with mental culture, it is timely to prepare a text-book of sports and pastimes for boys, which will best tend to promote this system of paying due attention to physical as well as mental education. An old writer says, Let me make the songs of a people, and I care not who makes their laws. This rule is as applicable to the structure of the sports of a people as it is to the com position of their songs. The pastimes of boys of all nations partake largely of the peculiar character of the people whose youth engage in them. The boys of a war like nation find their chief recreation in sports in which feats of brutal courage, and of endurance of fatigue and pain, are marked characteristics. On the other hand, the youths of a peaceful people enjoy those pastimes best which most com pare in their character with the national life of their progenitors. Differences in climate necessarily have their relation to the character of national sports but it is more in the essential character of the people themselves that their national pastimes differ, and this is especially noticeable in the receative sports of boys. It is in this respect that the games of American boyhood are different, as a rule, from those of English youths. Of course, there is a certain degree of similarity in most of them, arising from their English origin but there is scarcely an imported game that is at all open to improvement, which has not of late years been essentially Americanized witness the evolution of our manly national game of base-ball from the old English schoolboy game of Rounders. Excerpt from The Book of Sports IN preparing this little work, it has been a principal part of my object to serve the cause of physical education by directing the attention of young persons to sports of a healthful and invigorating tendency. Games of a mischiev one or exceptionable character, I have avoided, and sabati tuted in their stead brief sketches, that might not be less at tractive and interesting to boys. This is a book about young men who learned to play baseball during the 1930s and 1940s, and then went on to play for one of the most exciting major-league ball clubs ever fielded, the team that broke the colour barrier with Jackie Robinson. It is a book by and about a sportswriter who grew up near Ebbets Field, and who had the good fortune in the 1950s to cover the Dodgers for the Herald Tribune. This is a book about what happened to Jackie, Carl Erskine, Pee Wee Reese, and the others when their glory days were behind them. In short, it is a book fathers and sons and about the making of modern America. 'At a point in life when one is through with boyhood, but has not yet discovered how to be a man, it was my fortune to travel with the most marvelously appealing of teams.' Sentimental because it holds such promise, and bittersweet because that promise is past, the first sentence of this masterpiece of sporting literature, first published in the early '70s, sets its tone. The team is the mid-20th-century Brooklyn Dodgers, the team of Robinson and Snyder and Hodges and Reese, a team of great triumph and historical import composed of men whose fragile lives were filled with dignity and pathos. Roger Kahn, who covered that team for the New York Herald Tribune, makes understandable humans of his heroes as he chronicles the dreams and exploits of their young lives, beautifully intertwining them with his own, then recounts how so many of those sweet dreams curdled as the body of these once shining stars grew rusty with age and battered by experience.
