Visiting Las Vegas can be overwhelming because there is so much to see and do. I live here in Vegas, so I have the luxury of visiting any casino or attraction any time I want to, but your time here in the city is limited, so too is your money. By knowing all the possibilities that Vegas has to offer, you can choose among your options to get the most out of your time and money while you're here. This is why I have written this book. I want you to be able to thumb through everything in this book before you arrive, planning your trip before you leave, or maybe you can find time to read it on the plane, so you can put together a last minute plan of attack for your Vegas trip. Of course, many don't start making plans until they first step foot inside their hotel room. If you're one of these people, this is definitely the book for you. Every attraction on the Strip is listed and described in detail, including some of my own opinions, which you can feel free to disagree with. The attractions are sorted alphabetically by hotel, or by the name of the attraction if it is outside a hotel property. There are also special sections on low-cost transportation and low-cost meals. For the latter, you need to keep in mind that low cost is a relative term on the Strip. There is also a special section on interesting places to eat. Though not necessarily cheap, like McDonald's, these restaurants are unusual, uncommon and fascinating, and may make your stay here more fun. The last appendix is about a particular shopping center that, although on Las Vegas Blvd, is too far south to be considered the Strip. However, if you are going to do some shopping while in Las Vegas, you may want to make a visit here. The prices are often low for popular brand names.

The transformations of the Strip—from the fake Wild West to neon signs twenty stories high to “starchitecture”—and how they mirror America itself. The Las Vegas Strip has impersonated the Wild West, with saloon doors and wagon wheels; it has decked itself out in midcentury modern sleekness. It has illuminated itself with twenty-story-high neon signs, then junked them. After that came Disney-like theme parks featuring castles and pirates, followed by replicas of Venetian canals, New York skyscrapers, and the Eiffel Tower. (It might be noted that forty-two million people visited Las Vegas in 2015—ten million more than visited the real Paris.) More recently, the Strip decided to get classy, with casinos designed by famous architects and zillion-dollar collections of art. Las Vegas became the “implosion capital of the world” as developers, driven by competition, got rid of the old to make way for the new—offering a non-metaphorical definition of “creative destruction.” In The Strip, Stefan Al examines the many transformations of the Las Vegas Strip, arguing that they mirror transformations in America itself. The Strip is not, as popularly supposed, a display of architectural freaks but representative of architectural trends and a record of social, cultural, and economic change. Al tells two parallel stories. He describes the feverish competition of Las Vegas developers to build the snazziest, most tourist-grabbing casinos and resorts—with a cast of characters including the mobster Bugsy Siegel, the eccentric billionaire Howard Hughes, and the would-be political kingmaker Sheldon Adelson. And he views the Strip in a larger social context, showing that it has not only reflected trends but also magnified them and sometimes even initiated them. Generously illustrated with stunning color images throughout, The Strip traces the many metamorphoses of a city that offers a vivid projection of the American dream.

The Strip is world famous and not only for the casinos, but also for the many things to see and do. Of course, a lot of what you can do here costs money, but there are a number of things to do that are free. This book is a self-guided tour, taking you step by step down the Strip to visit all of the notable free things to do. This excludes most of the photo opportunities, because the entire length of the strip is filled with places to take a photo of you, your friends and relatives. Only a few places of interest, directly in our travel path, are mentioned. Also, shopping sites have been excluded except for three unique stores of interest on the Strip. The trip begins at the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign and ends in the downtown portion of Las Vegas Blvd. This is the old section of Las Vegas and is not considered a part of the Strip. I have included it to provide a complete Las Vegas experience.

A savage journey into the heart of Hunter S. Thompson's Las Vegas with the Good Doctor as tour guide. A Lord-of-the-Rings-like adventure in the city's underground flood channels. A seven-day stay at a seedy motel on East Fremont Street. The stories in My Week at the Blue Angel aren't about Steve Wynn, Cirque du Soleil, or how to play poker, and they aren't set in Caesars Palace, XS Nightclub, or a 2,000-seat showroom. They're about prostitutes, ex-cons, and the homeless, and they're set under Caesars Palace and in trailer parks and weekly motels. In this creative nonfiction collection, Matthew O'Brien--author of Beneath the Neon: Life and Death in the Tunnels of Las Vegas--and veteran photographer Bill Hughes show a side of the city rarely seen. A side beyond the neon lights, themed facades, and motel-room doors. A side beyond the barbwire fences, No Trespassing signs, and midnight shadows.

The Las Vegas Strip is expensive. And since most people visiting the Strip have a limited budget, it is important to make your money stretch as far as it can. This is the reason for this book: to point out all of the things you can do on the Strip that are affordable. I have defined affordable as an activity that costs $25 or less. Above $25, there seems to be a jump to the low 30 dollar amount, and then ramping up to price tags that are outside of an average person's bankroll. There are many things you can do on the Strip for free, but I have already written extensively on the topic in my book Free Things To Do on the Las Vegas Strip: A Self-Guided Tour. This book serves as a companion guide, but it stands alone as a good guide for low-cost fun. There is also a bonus section: Eating for under $10If you're as old as I ma, you likely remember a time when you could eat cheap in Las Vegas. All the casinos wanted was your gambling dollars, and they would entice you with many attractive discounts. All that is gone. Today, they are trying to make money on everything. Most casinos are now charging for parking! Las Vegas doesn't want you to eat for under $10, but I have made it my mission to go up and down the Strip looking for the few possibilities that still exist. Use this section to plan a few of your meals in advance to save some of your cash for other things.

WHO HAS TIME TO GAMBLE? Over 35 million people visit Las Vegas each year, but only 9% of them list gambling as the primary reason for their trip. Las Vegas is a lot more than just casinos, and this is the book that tells you about that "other stuff." 101 Things to do in Las Vegas without Gambling is your guide to the coolest city in the world. Look inside to find: Outstanding Restaurants - Treat yourself to a gourmet meal in the restaurant of a celebrity chef, or sample some of the local favorites. World Class Entertainment - Enjoy some of the biggest names in music and comedy, or marvel at the most elaborate production shows in the world. Spectacular Shopping - Experience hundreds of stores from the legendary names in fashion, or grab a souvenir from the world's largest gift shop. Endless Activities - Live without limits in the city that has it all, with enough golf courses, museums, sightseeing, thrill rides, luxurious pools, decadent spas, and sizzling night life to fill a dozen vacations. We chose the 101 Things in this book based upon the unscientific standard of "coolness." We're not saying that The Fonz would have enjoyed everything in the book, but if a guy can jump his motorcycle over a shark, he can probably appreciate a volcano that explodes every hour on the hour.
