DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from The Bibliographer's Manual of English Literature, Vol. 5: Containing an Account of Rare, Curious, and Useful Books, Published in or Relating to Great Britain and Ireland, From the Invention of Printing; With Bibliographical and Critical Notices, Collations of the Barer Articles, and the Prices at Which They Have On the publication of the Fourth Part of this work, it seemed to me that I had surmounted the most difficult half of my undertaking, and that the remainder would proceed with increased speed. But I was mistaken, and have found the present Part the most difficult and troublesome of any, and accordingly it has been the longest in hand. My predecessor evidently slackened as he advanced, while I feel impelled by the love of my subject into an opposite course; and being by circumstances thrown more than ever on my own resources, my labours increase instead of diminish. Bibliographers will see that the present Part has received an unusual amount of attention; indeed, almost every principal article has been revised or enlarged. It may suffice here to mention a few; Ireland, Irving (Washington), James ( G. P. R.), Jests, Johnson (Dr. S.), Junius, Klopstock, Knight (Charles), Kolmann (my first master), Kotzebue, Lamartine, Landor, Lardner (Dr.), Lamb (Charles), Landon (L. E. L.), Lewis, Lindley, Linnaeus, Lodge, London, Loudon, Luther, Lysons. Several of these, and especially Jests, Junius, and London, have been so extensively elaborated, that they may fairly be called Monographs. DOWNLOAD EBOOKMore than fifty specialists have contributed to this new edition of volume 1 of The Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature. The design of the original work has established itself so firmly as a workable solution to the immense problems of analysis, articulation and coordination that it has been retained in all its essentials for the new edition. The task of the new contributors has been to revise and integrate the lists of 1940 and 1957, to add materials of the following decade, to correct and refine the bibliographical details already available, and to re-shape the whole according to a new series of conventions devised to give greater clarity and consistency to the entries.
