If you need help having a baby, reproductive technology can supply the answer. But it also raises a host of questions that won’t arise until after the child is born: What will you say to “Where did I come from?” when the answer includes a donor or surrogate? Will knowing the truth about how you conceived make your child love you less? Will having a baby with someone else strain your relationship with your spouse or partner? What will grandparents, family members, friends, and coworkers think? Dr. Diane Ehrensaft--a developmental and clinical psychologist who’s worked with families formed using assisted reproductive technology for more than 20 years--helps you anticipate the big questions and find solutions that are right for you and your loved ones. Dr. Ehrensaft offers information, support, and straightforward advice for coping with private worries, confronting public prejudices, and raising happy, healthy children. Single or married, straight or gay, anyone looking forward to the joys and challenges of building a family with the help of a donor or surrogate will discover a wealth of thought-provoking ideas and fresh insights in this sensitive, practical, and positive book.

Written from a child’s point of view, this touching picture book centers around a nontraditional family of grandparents raising their grandchild. Sometimes It’s Grandmas and Grandpas shares a child’s experience living with and being cared for by grandparents through the eyes of a cheerful and delightful little girl. Uplifting watercolor illustrations give extra warmth to this caring and loving story, to which a growing number of children can identify—over 4.5 million children in the United States are primarily cared for by a grandparent. Poignant moments expressing the child’s curiosity and questions give way to comforting and playful exchanges at home with Nonnie and Poppy. Spending the day with this grandparent–led family, we see that it’s not always Mommies or Daddies that care for children, and that’s okay! Sometimes It’s Grandmas and Grandpas is the winner of the 2012 Book Award for Best Children’s Literature on Aging in the primary reader category from the The K-12 Committee of the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education (AGHE). It provides a great resource for children who seek reassurance about their particular experience. This unique book will appeal to any grandparent raising or providing long–term care for a grandchild, as well as any teacher who wants to educate children about nontraditional families. Sometimes It’s Grandmas and Grandpas sensitively addresses a topic that has been nearly absent in the children’s book market, until now.

I grew up in a pretty strict Catholic household where religion was always really important. My parents always taught me that I could do anything I put my mind to if I worked hard enough for it and that I should always be good and kind because what goes around comes around. I brought all these ideals with me into adulthood, and it seemed to be working well for me?until my husband and I decided to try to start a family. After a year of trying to get pregnant, my faith was shaken. Why didn't God want me to have a baby? Am I really that bad of a person that God doesn't think I should have such a gift? Finally, my pregnancy test came back positive, and I thought my tests and trials were over. Oh, I knew there would be small hurdles to get over; all young families experience that?I was just glad the worst was over. I missed feeling like I could depend on God. Little did I know my fertility issues were just a small blip compared to the trials we would experience after becoming pregnant. I originally wrote this book for my babies as they approach their first birthday. I wanted them to know how much they were loved and wanted from the beginning and for them to know their story. After having a few family members read the book, they agreed that I should publish it, as it has the potential to touch many lives. I hope it does.
