Excerpt from The Berwick Hymnal The right of publishing some of Miss Procter's hymns has been purchased from Messrs. George Bell and Sons, and of publishing Hymn 53 from Mr. W. Chatterton Dix. Special thanks must be given to Rev. J. V. Blake, of Chicago, Rev. J. W. Chadwick, of Brooklyn, Rev. J. F. Clarke, of Boston, W. C. Gannett, of Chicago, Rev. F. L. Hosmer, of Chicago, Rev. S. Longfellow, of Cambridge, Mass., Rev. M. J. Savage, of Boston, Mass., who have given me free permission to use their hymns. Mr. Longfellow has also given me permission to use the hymns of the late Rev. S. Johnson, and any others from Hymns of the Spirit. I have also to thank the Rev. W. Garrett Horder for much valuable assistance in preparing both editions of the Hymnal. I hope that any involuntary infringement of copy right may be forgiven. This hymn-book has been prepared solely for the use of my own congregation. It includes therefore no hymns for children, for whose use another book has already been compiled. Excerpt from The English Hymnal The english hymnal is a collection of the best hymns in the English language, and is Offered as a humble companion to the Book Of Common Prayer for use in the Church. It is not a party-book, express ing this or that phase of negation or excess, but an attempt to combine in one volume the worthiest expressions of all that lies within the Christian Creed, from those ancient Fathers who were the earliest hymn-writers down to contemporary exponents of modern aspirations and ideals. Excerpt from The Hymnal: Published in 1895 and Revised in 1911 The Hymnal was published in October, 1895, with a preface setting forth the principles which governed its preparation. The present edition marks no departure from these principles, and no change in the general character of the book. It has been prepared with a twofold aim. First: to make a thorough revision of the materials in the light of sixteen years' practical use of the book. Hymns and tunes failing to establish themselves in popular favor have been removed. Many tunes have been set in lower keys or modified in harmony, in the interests of congrega tional singing. In these matters the Committee has been fortunate in having the sympathetic cooperation of the Musical Editor. The text of the hymns has been minutely scrutinized from the point of view of accuracy, of rhythm, and of a sincere worship: the text of the Psalter continues to be that of the standard of the American Bible Society. The arrangement of the main body of hymns under the subjects of the Apostles' Creed has been more completely carried out, with a view to assist the memory in locating hymns; and the system of cross references has been extended. The notes upon the history of hymns and tunes have been carefully restudied and revised. Second: to bring the book abreast of the latest develop ments of hymnody, and of the present state of Christian thought and feeling; especially to meet the demand for the recognition of God's nearness to everyday living, the coming of the kingdom in the sphere of common life, the spirit of brotherhood and of manly and resolute Christian life and service, social betterment, and evangelistic work. In the choice of new tunes preference has been given to those whose acceptability has been elsewhere tested in actual use; and some familiar tunes have been restored. Excerpt from The Packer Hymnal HE Compilers of this Hymnal have been guided entirely by a desire to lead young people to a fuller appreciation of the beauty and helpfulness of the best Hymns of the Church. A tune capable of perfectly expressing a particular hymn can hardly be written as a piece of music merely; it is the result of an inspiration arising out of a sympa thetic understanding of the meaning and Spirit of the hymn. The hymn is really what is sung, and therefore should never be belittled by association with a tune below it in dignity, or inadequate to express its sentiment. Thus the first requisite of a Hymnal is a worthy selection of hymns; and the second, a gathering of genuinely musical tunes, as far as possible composed for the hymns to which they are set. In a Hymnal intended especially for the use of young people, the brightness and happiness of youth should find full expression; hence, from a rich and endless store, the Editors have here selected only those hymns and tunes which they know, from personal experience, to be thoroughly singable, enjoyable, inspiring, and worthy to be cherished in the hearts and memories of children. Especial care has been exercised in the selection of hymns for Little Children. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
