Bamboos constitute one of a few select categories of plants which are taxonomically related, very rich in species and of vital economic and ecological importance. Since the early 20th century the accepted number of species of bamboos, world wide, has tripled. However, until now information was scattered through numerous, often not easily available publications. The Bamboos of the World, is the first comprehensive (taxonomic as well as horticultural) reference work that provides basic information on bamboos world wide, whether they are wild or cultivated, well-known or rather unknown. The work, based on bamboo literature, facilitates access to further data by citation and a comprehensive bibliography. Among the main data included are botanical names with synonyms, and geographical distribution of genera and species, varieties with their distinctive characters, common bamboo names, plant introductions to the West, plant size and uses. The distribution of genera is mapped. The Bamboos of the World presents a wealth of essential information in an accessible and structured manner. It gives the opportunity to check under what names, and where, relevant information on any bamboo can be found. For the researcher with management and development interests it provides a convenient means of basing bamboo resource on a sound understanding of generic and species relationships, with names that appear in earlier literature put into context. The work should prove to be invaluable for those interested in the morphology, taxonomy, distribution and cultivation of bamboos. It should support botanical, forestry, horticultural and ecological research, training and resource management.

This book was compiled by researchers of Chinese Academy of Forestry, Sichuan Agricultural University, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Southwest Forestry University, and Kunming University of Science and Technology. It has been the most comprehensive monograph about the bamboo resources in China until now. "Illustrated Flora of Bambusoideae in China" is composed of two volumes. This volume 1 contains three sections. The first section includes prefaces written by Wu Zhengyi, Chen Junyu, and Li Dezhu, and the foreword by the authors. The second section is about morphology of bamboos, geographical distribution of Bambusoideae, and hardiness zoning of Bambusoideae in China. The third section mainly introduces about bamboo taxa in the supertribe Bambusatae, including the tribe Melocanneae Benth. (Melocanna Trin.,Pseudostachyum Munro, Melocalamus Benth., Leptocanna Chia et H. L. Fung, Schizostachyum Nees,Cephalostachyum Munro, Thyrsostachys Gamble, Bonia Balansa), the tribe Bambuseae Trin.(Neomicrocalamus Keng f., Guadua Kunth, Bambusa Retz. corr. Schreber, Lingnania McClure), the tribe Dendrocalameae Benth. (Neosinocalamus Keng f., Dendrocalamopsis (Chia et H. L. Fung) Keng f.,Dendrocalamus Nees, Gigantochloa Kurz ex Munro), and the tribe Shibataeeae Nakai emend. Keng f. (Indosasa McClure, Sinobambusa Makino ex Nakai, Chimonobambusa Makino, Qiongzhuea Hsueh et Yi,Hibanobambusa I. Maruyama et H. Okamura, Brachystachyum Keng, Phyllostachys Sieb. et Zucc.,Shibataea Makino ex Nakai, Semiarundinaria Makino ex Nakai). Totally, 512 bamboo taxa are recorded in this book, including four hybrids, 119 forms, 38 varieties, and 351 species in 25 genera of four tribes.

The history of the grass subfamily Bambusoideae is reviewed and nomenclatural problems of subfamilial and tribal level are explored. Characters are presented to distinguish the subfamily from all other grasses and differentiating features of the two major groups of bamboosherbaceous and woodyare included. Keys are given for the tribes and genera of herbaceous American bamboos and genera of woody American bamboos, the latter based principally on vegetative characters. A conspectus of the subfamily also appears, with a list of all 37 genera recognized in the American continent, each with nomenclatural and taxonomic notes. Comments on the morphology of the bamboo plant and the systematic value of some characters, especially vegetative, are given in the introduction.

Many well-known specialists have contributed to this book which presents for the first time an in-depth look at the viruses, their satellites and the retrotransposons infecting (or occuring in) one plant family: the Poaceae (Gramineae). After molecular and biological descriptions of the viruses to species level, virus diseases are presented by crop: barley, maize, rice, rye, sorghum, sugarcane, triticales, wheats, forage, ornamental and lawn. A detailed index of the viruses and taxonomic lists will help readers in the search for information.

This is the first comprehensive book on Argentinian pedology. It discusses the main soil types of Argentina, their geographical distribution, classification, functions, agricultural use, ecological aspects, and the threats to which they have been subjected during centuries of intensive and extensive management. The description of the soils is accompanied by a complete set of data, pictures and maps, including benchmark profiles and an overview of the country's agricultural production. It also deals with future scenarios of the relationships between soil science and other disciplines and the main challenges that soil science will face in the future. Further, the book explores aspects of the main soil forming factors, such as climate, vegetation, geology and geomorphology, making use of new, unpublished data and elaborations, and presents a history of pedological research in Argentina.

The Atlantic Forest is one of the 36 hotspots for biodiversity conservation worldwide. It is a unique, large biome (more than 3000 km in latitude; 2500 in longitude), marked by high biodiversity, high degree of endemic species and, at the same time, extremely threatened. Approximately 70% of the Brazilian population lives in the area of this biome, which makes the conflict between biodiversity conservation and the sustainability of the human population a relevant issue. This book aims to cover: 1) the historical characterization and geographic variation of the biome; 2) the distribution of the diversity of some relevant taxa; 3) the main threats to biodiversity, and 4) possible opportunities to ensure the biodiversity conservation, and the economic and social sustainability. Also, it is hoped that this book can be useful for those involved in the development of public policies aimed at the conservation of this important global biome.
