In Masonic Temples, William D. Moore introduces readers to the structures American Freemasons erected over the sixty-year period from 1870 to 1930, when these temples became a ubiquitous feature of the American landscape. As representations of King Solomon’s temple in ancient Jerusalem erected in almost every American town and city, Masonic temples provided specially designed spaces for the enactment of this influential fraternity’s secret rituals. Using New York State as a case study, Moore not only analyzes the design and construction of Masonic structures and provides their historical context, but he also links the temples to American concepts of masculinity during this period of profound economic and social transformation. By examining edifices previously overlooked by architectural and social historians, Moore decodes the design and social function of Masonic architecture and offers compelling new insights into the construction of American masculinity. Four distinct sets of Masonic ritual spaces—the Masonic lodge room, the armory and drill room of the Knights Templar, the Scottish Rite Cathedral, and the Shriners’ mosque – form the central focus of this volume. Moore argues that these spaces and their accompanying ceremonies communicated four alternative masculine archetypes to American Freemasons—the heroic artisan, the holy warrior, the adept or wise man, and the frivolous jester or fool. Although not a Freemason, Moore draws from his experience as director of the Chancellor Robert R Livingston Masonic Library in New York City, where heutilized sources previously inaccessible to scholars. This "Dictionary" was compiled at the request of the publisher from materials accumulated by the undersigned during a thirty-three years' career as an editor. It is intended for the information of Catholics, especially the reverend clergy, among whom there has long been a demand for a reliable reference work on the subject of secret and other societies into which Catholics are liable to be drawn. For obvious reasons all specifically Catholic societies, as well as, societies consisting exclusively of Catholics and having the ecclesiastical approbation, have been excluded. On the other hand it has not been deemed wise to draw the lines too narrowly, but for the sake of completeness a large number of organizations have been included which are neither secret nor even quasi-secret, but purely beneficial, civic, patriotic, and so forth. The difference in the length of the various articles is not always owing to reasons of larger or smaller importance, but to the amount of information obtainable. While the compiler has circularized all the societies listed in this book, so far as he was able to ascertain their addresses, not all of the respective officers have responded to his questionnaire, and among those that did, not all gave the information desired.

Beginning with Latin America in the fifteenth century, this book, first published in 2005, is a social history of the experiences of African Muslims and their descendants throughout the Americas, including the Caribbean. The record under slavery is examined, as is the post-slavery period into the twentieth century. The experiences vary, arguably due to some extent to the Old World context. Muslim revolts in Brazil are also discussed, especially in 1835, by way of a nuanced analysis. The second part of the book looks at the emergence of Islam among the African-descended in the United States in the twentieth century, with successive chapters on Noble Drew Ali, Elijah Muhammad, and Malcolm X, with a view to explaining how orthodoxy arose from varied unorthodox roots.
