More over, if we make the target cup-shaped with its concavity toward the cathode the dark girdle will extend forward, being wider. This appearance is well shown in Fig. 50. As we increase the depth of the concavity in the target the front illuminated area is pushed more forward. Under some conditions we can, on the contrary, make this girdle very narrow by using a flat target, a high vacuum and electro-motive force.
