Ten Philosophical Essays By: Kamal A. Shlbei This book contains ten philosophical essays written from 2008 to 2010 as part of the prerequisites for writing a dissertation to obtain a doctoral degree in the Department of Philosophy at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. These essays vary in their philosophical themes and historical periods. In the first essay, we stand at the problem of the thing-in-itself as raised by the German philosopher Immanuel Kant and the criticisms leveled at it by the philosophers who followed it. The second essay reveals the dialectical relationship between value theory and theory of knowledge in Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit. The third essay exposes the forgetfulness into which Deleuze fell when he neglected the study of Jacobi and Suarez on the subject of individual ontology. The fourth essay reveals the internal relations between the concepts of domination, power, and knowledge in the context of Foucault's intellectual development from the stage of archeology to the stage of genealogy to the stage of self-care. The fifth essay explores Al-Farabi's philosophical view of happiness, which, although it seems parallel to Aristotle's understanding, has its own Islamic character. The sixth essay deals with the thesis of essence and existence in Aquinas’ On Being and Essence. The seventh essay presents the problem of the unity of intellect between Averroes and Aquinas, in light of the controversy taking place in the Middle Ages over the ontological proof of God. The eighth essay examines the relation between justice of law and law of justice according to Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics. The ninth essay returns to the problem of essence and existence, but in its modern philosophical dimension, as it was manifested in Kierkegaard's existential philosophy through his book Philosophical Fragments. The tenth essay presents Marx's criticism of Hegel in the light of historical materialism.

Pithy, direct, and bold: essays that propose new ways to think about old problems, spanning a range of philosophical topics. In Philosophical Provocations, Colin McGinn offers a series of short, sharp essays that take on philosophical problems ranging from the concept of mind to paradox, altruism, and the relation between God and the Devil. Avoiding the usual scholarly apparatus and embracing a blunt pithiness, McGinn aims to achieve as much as possible in as short a space as possible while covering as many topics as possible. Much academic philosophical writing today is long, leaden, citation heavy, dense with qualifications, and painful to read. The essays in Philosophical Provocations are short, direct, and engaging, often challenging philosophical orthodoxy as they consider issues in mind, language, knowledge, metaphysics, biology, ethics, and religion. McGinn is looking for new ways to think about old problems. Thus he writes, about consciousness, “I think we have been all wrong,” and goes on to suggest that both consciousness and the unconscious are mysteries. Summing up his proposal on altruism, he remarks, “My suggestion can now be stated, somewhat brutally, as follows: human altruism is the result of parasitic manipulation.” He takes a moment to reflect: “I really don't know why it is good to be alive, though I am convinced that the standard suggestions don't work.” McGinn gets straight to the point and states his position with maximum clarity. These essays offer provocative invitations to think again.

This book is not a study of Plato's philosophy, but a contribution to the literary interpretation of the dialogues, through analysis of their formal structure, characterisation, language and imagery. Among the dialogues considered in these interrelated essays are some of Plato's most admired and influential works, including the Gorgias, the Symposium, the Republic and the Phaedrus. Special attention is paid to the personality of Socrates, Plato's remarkable mentor, and to his interaction with the other characters in the dialogues. Rutherford also includes detailed discussion of particular problems such as the sources for our knowledge of Socrates, the origins of the dialogue form, Plato's use of myth, and the 'totalitarianism' of the Republic. The combination of sympathetic literary criticism with exact historical scholarship gives The Art of Plato its special qualities.

Richard Taylor was born in Charlotte, Michigan on 5 November 1919. He received his A. B. from the University of illinois in 1941, his M. A. from Oberlin College in 1947, and his Ph. D. from Brown University in 1951. He has been William H. P. Faunce Professor of Philosophy at Brown University, Professor of Philosophy (Graduate Faculties) at Columbia University, and Professor of Philosophy at the University of Rochester. He is the author of about fifty articles and of five philosophical books. This volume consists of essays presented to Richard Taylor on the occa sion of his sixtieth birthday. Some of the contributors have been Taylor'S students; some have been his colleagues; and all have been, and continue to be, his admirers. I have made several attempts to articulate what it is I (I would not presume to speak for anyone else) admire about Richard Taylor: (1) There is a particular 'flavor' to Taylor's philosophical writing and con versation that is wholly delightful. Like any other flavor, it can be tasted and enjoyed and remembered but never adequately described. (If there should be someone who has picked up this book who does not know what I mean, I recommend that he read the chapter on 'God' in Taylor's Metaphysics. ) (2) Taylor is a masterful dialectician.
