A newly revised and updated edition of the influential guide that explores one of the most powerful ways to attract attention and influence behavior—fascination—and how businesses, products, and ideas can become irresistible to consumers. In an oversaturated culture defined by limited time and focus, how do we draw attention to our messages, our ideas, and our products when we only have seconds to compete? Award-winning consultant and speaker Sally Hogshead turned to a wide realm of disciplines, including neurobiology, psychology, and evolutionary anthropology. She began to see specific and interesting patterns that all centered on one element: fascination. Fascination is the most powerful way to capture an audience and influence behavior. This essential book examines the principles behind fascination and explores how those insights can be put to use to sway: • Which brand of frozen peas you pick in the case • Which city, neighborhood, and house you choose • Which profession and company you join • Where you go on vacation • Which book you buy off the shelf Structured around the seven languages of fascination Hogshead has studied and developed—power, passion, innovation, alarm, mystique, prestige, and alert—Fascinate explores how anyone can use these triggers to make products, messages, and services more fascinating—and more successful.

Bestselling author and world-renowned executive coach Marshall Goldsmith examines the environmental and psychological triggers that can derail us at work and in life. Do you ever find that you are not the patient, compassionate problem solver you believe yourself to be? Are you surprised at how irritated or flustered the normally unflappable you becomes in the presence of a specific colleague at work? Have you ever felt your temper accelerate from zero to sixty when another driver cuts you off in traffic? Our reactions don’t occur in a vacuum. They are usually the result of unappreciated triggers in our environment—the people and situations that lure us into behaving in a manner diametrically opposed to the colleague, partner, parent, or friend we imagine ourselves to be. These triggers are constant and relentless and omnipresent. So often the environment seems to be outside our control. Even if that is true, as Goldsmith points out, we have a choice in how we respond. In Triggers, his most powerful and insightful book yet, Goldsmith shows how we can overcome the trigger points in our lives, and enact meaningful and lasting change. Goldsmith offers a simple “magic bullet” solution in the form of daily self-monitoring, hinging around what he calls “active” questions. These are questions that measure our effort, not our results. There’s a difference between achieving and trying; we can’t always achieve a desired result, but anyone can try. In the course of Triggers, Goldsmith details the six “engaging questions” that can help us take responsibility for our efforts to improve and help us recognize when we fall short. Filled with revealing and illuminating stories from his work with some of the most successful chief executives and power brokers in the business world, Goldsmith offers a personal playbook on how to achieve change in our lives, make it stick, and become the person we want to be.

"Smartphones have changed the way humans interact with the world. This change poses serious challenges to regulating one’s smartphone use alongside other daily activities, especially for adolescents who are in a developmental stage marked by reduced parental regulation and still immature self-regulation. Consequently, societal concern around the impact of social media and smartphone use on adolescents’ everyday functioning is growing. However, surprisingly little scientific research has been dedicated to investigating the direct effects of social media use on adolescents’ attention required for everyday functioning. Therefore, this dissertation aims, in four empirical chapters (Chapters 2-5), to investigate how adolescents’ social media and smartphone use affect their distraction, task delay, and sleep quality, and to explore how the effects on distraction and task delay may differ from adolescent to adolescent. This dissertation relies on data from a large intensive longitudinal data collection, including two experience sampling method (ESM) bursts (fielded in December 2019 and June 2020), and smartphone tracking data (June 2020). In both ESM bursts, adolescents received six surveys per day for 21 consecutive days, measuring their social media use (time spent), distraction, and task delay over the past hour, as well as last night’s sleep quality. In total, this resulted in more than 55,000 completed experience sampling surveys and over 750,000 smartphone tracking observations among 383 different adolescents. Together, the research findings yield three important conclusions: 1) the effect of social media use on distraction is strong, 2) the effect of social media use on distraction is universal, and 3) smartphone-related task delay and sleep impairments are dependent on the person, the timing, and the app that is used."--
