Excerpt from Tactical Deductions From the War of 1870-71 The principal task which I have undertaken is to describe the peculiarities to be noticed in the late battles, in which, for the first time, the infantry of both armies used a breechloader, and hence to draw conclusions for the tactics of the present day. The sketch which will be found at the beginning of the volume of the history of the French and German armies may give the reader an idea in a few words of their tactics, organiza tion, and prevailing tone.
