Our world is changing fast. Countries’ transport systems, which have long been shaped by project-by-project considerations, must help achieve higher-level goals for the well-being of mankind, as embodied by the UN's Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Climate Agreement. New forces impose greater effectiveness in the way public choices are made, such as making better use of data and technologies, adopting a more inclusive and participatory approach to decision making, and addressing social concerns about equity. Transport practitioners and country decision-makers have been looking for structured and coherent guidance about ways to adjust to these new dynamics and change the trajectory of transport system. This book examines the rationale for and details an innovative approach for public decision-making to expedite the pace to sustainable mobility.
Smart sustainable mobility ecosystems promise to address society’s expectation of environmentally friendly on-demand mobility. While the technology stack to build such ecosystems is just around the corner in the form of connected, automated, and electric vehicles, strategies to deploy and operate such fleets in a coordinated manner must still be advanced. Most of such optimization challenges highly depend on the nature of customer demand, vehicle supply, and environmental influences. Hence, this dissertation investigates how available data streams from mobility ecosystems can be leveraged in Information Systems to solve related decision problems. The overarching goal of this work is to generate design knowledge to improve vehicle availability, provider profitability, and environmental sustainability for such ecosystems. Applying quantitative methods to real-world data from shared vehicle systems generates insights into the nature of demand and supply. Combining it with an analysis of empirical research on vehicle relocation algorithms builds the foundation for two artifact designs. The first artifact enables the development and simulation-based evaluation of operation modes for vehicle fleets. The second artifact enables artificial intelligence-based decision support for the vehicle rebalancing problem. The insights are finally incorporated and generalized to a nascent design theory on data-enabled operational decision-making in the context of smart sustainable mobility environments. The findings have multifaceted implications for researchers concerned with data-enabled value creation in Green IS, shared economy and smart mobility, and business analytics and data science. Furthermore, guidance for fleet providers to improve system attractiveness and for society to experience the potential amount of vehicle access without personal ownership is provided.
This book is focussing on the results of the mobil.LAB Doctoral Research Group “Sustainable mobility in the metropolitan region of Munich” for its first phase. It highlights the key findings of young scientists from diverse disciplines on selected issues of sustainable mobility, such as neighbourhood mobility, sustainable modes, regional governance and spatial aspects. This includes insights of methods used to assess sustainable mobility, the way how to study and how to conceptualize sustainable development in each of the contributions. Each chapter is built on case studies in cooperation with practice partners and based on empirical data in the metropolitan region of Munich. Moreover, a common understanding of sustainable mobility in metropolitan regions and future research perspectives on mobility cultures are developed. In consequence, the knowledge and experiences are shared in order to generate strategies and actions to address, promote and support sustainable mobility in metropolitan regions.
The catalogue of policy measures of the Global Roadmap of Action Toward Sustainable Mobility (GRA takes stock of 182 policy measures that have been used and tested around the world in support of sustainable mobility. It is the deliberated outcome of a process that spanned more than 18 months and involved over 180 experts and 55 public and private organizations making their knowledge available to the SuM4All platform. The catalogue represents the most up-to-date intelligence on policies to achieve any of the four policy goals.
Sustainable Urban Mobility Pathways examines how sustainable urban mobility solutions contribute to achieving worldwide sustainable development and global climate change targets, while also identifying barriers to implementation and strategies to overcome them. Building on city-to-city cooperation experiences in Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America, the book examines key challenges in the context of the Paris Agreement, UN Sustainable Development Goals and the New Urban Agenda, including policies needed to achieve a sustainable, low-carbon pathway for transport and how an integrated policy strategy is designed to provide a basis for political coalitions. The book explores which institutional framework creates sufficient political stability and continuity to foster the take-up of and long-term support for sustainable transport strategies. The linkages of climate change and wider sustainable development objectives are covered, including success stories, best practices, and quantitative analysis for key emerging economies in public transport, walking, cycling, freight and logistics, vehicle technology and fuels, urban planning and integration, and national framework policies. Sustainable mobility is a qualitative, vague and normative vision. Although this vagueness is often criticized and seen as a drawback it also allows diverse stakeholders to commit to the goal of sustainable mobility. It allows for consensus, which can also help achieve a transport system that enables mobility for current and future generations. The goal of sustainable mobility is an ambitious one and requires a long-term and process-oriented perspective. With this in mind, this volume examines sustainable mobilities from multiple angles varying by time, region, cultural and economic backgrounds, local stakeholders and governance structures. By achieving a better understanding of mobility behaviour and mobility needs in different contexts this book develops innovative strategies and advances modelling approaches which evaluate these strategies. Presented here is not an ideal package of strategies to achieve sustainable mobility but rather innovations in the different disciplines and fields to show how each of them can contribute to keeping all people mobile - today and in the future.
The Global Roadmap of Action Toward Sustainable Mobility is the culmination of a joint effort by the Sustainable Mobility for All (SuM4All) to develop a comprehensive policy framework to assist decision makers in cities and countries as well as practitioners at development banks to identify gaps, necessary steps, and appropriate instruments to attain the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and improve the sustainability of their transport sector.On the basis of the imperative established by the Global Mobility Report (2017), the GRA private sector consultations paper and the 6 GRA policy papers (Urban, Rural, Gender, Efficiency, Safety and Green mobility) comes this centerpiece report - embodying the collective knowledge of all 55 SuM4All Member organizations and 180 experts. It was developed through an iterative process to ensure its relevance and practicality. Over 50 policy decision makers at the country and city levels engaged on various drafts and to share their experiences, and more than 25 large corporations were questioned on constraints in the enabling environment to innovate and create the solutions of the future. Donors supporting this effort over an 18-month period included: the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, the World Bank and the Michelin Foundation.With this tool in hand, SuM4All is now equipped to engage with decision makers in a new dialogue on mobility and support their transition towards sustainable mobility. The content of this paper has also been made accessible and usable to all in the 'Online Tool Toward Sustainable Mobility' hosted on the SuM4All website
In a rapidly changing world, it is necessary to increase the engagement of local authorities and stakeholders to make urban mobility cleaner and more sustainable. The best way is to combine great ideas and innovative measures with political support. This Special Issue consists of six articles analyzing the impact of SUMPs. Innovative measures have been proposed to change urban transport systems towards sustainability: Chinese research has analyzed the tourist flow of Tibet using innovative technologies: mobile phone data, visualizations using GIS, and social networks. Lithuanian authors proposed three autonomous car travel development concepts that should become a conceptual tool in the development of ITS and C-ITS. An English scientific paper is based on a review of local transport policy documents from 13 cities in four countries. Most cities seek to reduce car travel as a proportion of trips. Experience from Slovenia shows that the comprehensive traffic calming approach has positive effects and contributes to achieving sustainable mobility. Korean researchers used the GINI coefficient to evaluate the bus system to identify bus nodes in order of importance. The last article described that multicriteria decision-making methods have been successfully used for assessing the effectiveness of sustainable transport systems, and a universal evaluation model was proposed.
