Excerpt from Sussex Archaeological Collections, Relating to the History and Antiquities of the County, Vol. 23 Material History - Under the hundred of Ghidenetroi, Domesday says of Rachitoue Ivo holds it of the Earl (roger), Fnloo held it of King Edward. It had con stantl been rated at five hides. The arable was then four plough lends. There was one plough in the demesne, and eight rillans, and thirteen borders, who had two ploughs and a half. There were three acres of pasture and a wood of four hogs; and in Chiohester a bags or shop, worth meaty peace. In the reign of the Coufessor it was valued at 60a, subsequently at 408. Its Domesday value was £4. After the Conquest Baotou became part of the vast Earl dom of Roger de Montgomeri, related to the Conqueror, who dignified him with the titles of Earl of Chichester and Arundel. In later Norman reigns the knightly Sanzavers were admitted as mesue lords. Hugh Sauzaver held it in 1284. We come now to the Gouuter family, whose members for many generations resided at Boston.
