Excerpt from Surgical Anatomy for Students This work contains the substance of a series of demonstra tions, delivered by myself, to students in course of preparation for the final examinations. The book is intended for students to use with the living model. The study of Surgical Anatomy from illustrations alone is answerable for many of the rejections in this subject at the final examinations. N 0 picture or description will enable a student to instantly compress the. Subclavian artery, place his finger on a given prominence, or name a deeply seated tendon. These demonstrations have always been given upon the living subject, and I insist that students should actually feel and delineate the structures discussed. The allusions 'to operations and injuries are intended to give interest to the text. Knowledge of a surgical operation, to be of practical value, should be complete in every detail. The scope of a work of this nature, forbids that it should in any way be regarded, as a guide to the Operations of Surgery. Excerpt from Surgical Anatomy It IS hoped that the aim will commend itself to medical men, and to students of surgery and of anatomy, and that they Will find the detail given sufficient to obviate frequent reference to systematic text-books of anatomy. Generally, the author has followed the teaching of the standard British and Continental Works, and to these he gladly. Acknowledges his indebtedness. On a number of points, however-as, for example, regarding the function of the periosteum - he has followed that of his teacher, Sir William Macewen, whose opinions are based not merely upon clinical experience, but also in many cases upon long Series of experiments. Excerpt from A d104-Book of Surgical Anatomy Anatomic facts are dry only as they are isolated. Trans lated into their clinical values they are clothed with living interest. No teacher can impart, . Or student assimilate, all the details of anatomy: The facts must be sifted, their comparative values fixed, and the reason for their acquisition demonstrated by directing attention to the practical problems with which they are associated. Surgical Anatomy Joseph Maclise expansive gaze over all allying and allied species, the intellect bodies forth to its vision the full appointed form of natural majesty; and after having experienced the manifold analogies and differentials of the many, is thereby enabled, when it returns to the study of the one, to view this one of human type under manifold points of interest, to the appreciation of which the understanding never wakens otherwise. If it did not happen that the study of the human form (confined to itself) had some practical bearing, such study could not deserve the name of anatomical, while anatomical means comparative, and whilst comparison implies inductive reasoning. However, practical anatomy, such as it is, is concerned with an exact knowledge of the relationship of organs as they stand in reference to each other, and to the whole design of which these organs are the integral parts We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Excerpt from Lectures on Surgical Anatomy The following pages are an abstract of the lectures on surgical anatomy which form one division of the summer course on practical surgery delivered by the Author. These lectures are now published in the hope that they may be of some use to the student of surgery. They are also intended to encourage the student of anatomy, and to show him the important practical bearings of the details of anatomy. They do not embrace the surgical anatomy of the female organs of generation, the eye, and ear, as these subjects do not come within the scope of a course of lectures devoted to the relations of anatomy to general surgery. The Author has to acknowledge the able assistance of Mr. Charles Berjeau, who has drawn on stone, from original dissections, the figures which are intended not only as illustrations of the text, but also as guides to the senior student when dissecting the body, with special relation to practical surgery. Excerpt from Operative Surgery, for Students and Practitioners IN this volume an endeavor has been made to combine, in a practical manner, the subjects of surgical anatomy and operative surgery, because a knowledge of the one is essential to the proper study of the other. Diagrammatic drawings have been used largely for the purpose of illustration, because these, in my judgment, are the most satisfactory for teaching. An effort has been made to exclude all those anatomical considerations that are purely technical and not of practical value in the performance of surgical operations. Excerpt from A Manual of Surgical Anatomy The production of a new book on Surgical Anatomy calls for a word of explanation. For some years past, while acting as Demonstrators of Anatomy in the University of Edinburgh, we have been struck by the fact that senior students and graduates, when working in the dissecting room, seldom make use of any of the numerous excellent works on Surgical Anatomy. They seem to prefer standard books on Regional Anatomy, and while they assimilate the anatomical facts, they frequently fail to appreciate their surgical application. Recognising that, when possible, Surgical Anatomy should be studied from dis sections, we have endeavoured to present the subject m a form suitable for use in the dissecting room. The general framework of this book 15 founded on a series of lectures on Surgical Anatomy delivered by one of the authors in connection with the Edinburgh post-graduate Course. While it has been found impossible to avoid encroaching on the subject of Operative Surgery, an endeavour has been made to bring into prominence the anatomy of the operations, excluding as far as possible the details of surgical technique. In order to keep the size of the volume within bounds, it has been found necessary to omit, almost entirely, the descriptions of amputations of the limbs. On account of the frequency with which tuberculous disease of bones and joints starts in, and spreads from, the ends of the diaphyses (metaphyses), special attention has been given to the anatomical relations which these regions and the adjacent epiphyses bear to the capsules and synovial reflections of the corresponding joints and in order to emphasise the importance of these relations, we have included a number of figures in which they are illustrated. Excerpt from A Text-Book of Operative Surgery, Covering the Surgical Anatomy and Operative Technic Involved in the Operations of General Surgery: Written for Students and Practitioners The clinical aspect of Operative Surgery has been less fully dealt with and in generalizations in connection with groups of operations, rather than specifically in connection with individual operations. An apology for the amount of Anatomy given may seem, to some, meces sary. From the standpoint of the pure technician, Operative Surgery is, largely, Applied Anatomy - the application of the facts of Surgical Anatomy during the progress of Surgical Manipulations - the resulting Operative Technic being more or less perfect as the knowledge of the Surgical Anatomy and the conduction of the Surgical Manipulations are more or less perfect. Theoretically, it is proper to expect fourth - year Students to come into the Operating Room with their Anatomy in an available form for surgical work - practically, this is rarely found - and is often absent in seasoned Operators.
