DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe aim of this NATO ASI has been to present an up-to-date overview of current areas of interest in amorphous materials, with particular emphasis on electronic properties and device applications. In order to limit the material to a manageable amount, the meeting was concerned almost exclusively with semiconducting materials. This volume should be regarded as a follow-on to the NATO ASI held in Sozopol, Bulgaria in 1996 and published as "Amorphous Insulators and Semiconductors" edited by M.F. Thorpe and M.1. Mitkova (Kluwer Academic Publishers, NATO ASI series, 3 High Technology - Vol. 23). The lectures and seminars fill the gap between graduate courses and research seminars. The lecturers and seminar speakers were chosen as experts in their respective areas, and the lectures and seminars that were given are presented in this volume. During the first week of the meeting, an emphasis was placed on introductory lectures while the second week focused more on research seminars. There were two very good poster sessions that generated a lot of discussion, but these are not reproduced in this volume as the editors wanted to have only larger contributions to make the proceedings more coherent.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe book is based on International Summer Schools on Biophysics held in Croatia which, contrary to other workshops centered mainly on one topic or technique, has very broad scope providing advanced training in areas related to biophysics. This volume presents papers in the field of biophysics for studying biological phenomena by using physical methods and/or concepts. Its scope should be of interest for students at doctoral or postdoctoral level and to experienced scientists.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis book investigates the latest developments in supramolecular assembly systems for mimicking biological structures and functions. Consisting of 14 chapters, it covers various assembly systems, such as polysaccharides, peptides, proteins, biopolymers, natural materials and various hybrid systems. Further, it focuses on different types of supramolecular systems with particular functions or structures that are relevant to living systems. A number of modern techniques used to study the supramolecular systems, such as total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy (TIRFM) and two-photon confocal microscopy, are also introduced in detail. Unlike conventional books on supramolecular assemblies, this book highlights the functions of the assembly systems, particularly their biological applications. As such, it offers a valuable resource for experienced researchers, as well as graduate students working in the field of supramolecular chemistry and biomimetic systems.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKHow did life begin on the Earth? The units of life are cells, which can be defined as bounded systems of molecules that capture energy and nutrients from the environment -- systems that expand, reproduce, and evolve over time, often into more complex systems. This book is the proceedings of a unique meeting, sponsored by NATO and held in Maratea, Italy, that brought together for the first time an international group of investigators who share an interest in how molecules self-assemble into supramolecular structures, and how those structures may have contributed to the origin of life. The book is written at a moderately technical level, appropriate for use by researchers and by students in upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses in biochemistry and molecular biology. The overall interest of its subject matter provides an excellent introduction for students who wish to understand how the foundational knowledge of chemistry and physics can be applied to one of the most fundamental questions now facing the scientific community. The editors are pioneers in defining what we mean by the living state, particularly the manner in which simple molecular systems can assume complex associations and functions, including the ability to reproduce. Each chapter of the book presents an up-to-date report of highly significant research. Two of the authors received medals from the National Academy of Science USA in 1994, and other research reported in the book has been featured in internationally recognized journals such Scientific American, Time, and Discover.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKTools for Chemical Product Design: From Consumer Products to Biomedicine describes the challenges involved in systematic product design across a variety of industries and provides a comprehensive overview of mathematical tools aimed at the design of chemical products, from molecular design to customer products. Chemical product design has become increasingly important over the past decade and includes a wide range of sectors including gasoline additives and blends in the petroleum industry, active ingredients and excipients in the pharmaceutical industry, and a variety of consumer products and specialty chemicals. Traditionally, such products have been designed through trial and error methods, which not only are time-consuming, but more importantly only provide limited knowledge that can be translated into next generation products. Features an impressive collection of contributions from leading researchers in the field Presents the latest tools available across a variety of industries Describes the challenges involved in systematic product design as well as the latest methods for solving such problems Covers a wide range of sectors including gasoline additives and blends in the petroleum industry, active ingredients and excipients in the pharmaceutical industry, and a variety of consumer products and specialty chemicals

DOWNLOAD EBOOKOut-of-Equilibrium (Supra)molecular Systems and Materials A must-have resource that covers everything from out-of-equilibrium chemical systems to active materials Out-of-Equilibrium (Supra)molecular Systems and Materials presents a comprehensive overview of the synthetic approaches that use molecular and supramolecular bonds in various out-of-equilibrium situations. With contributions from noted experts on the topic, the text contains information on the design of dissipative chemical systems that adapt their structures in space and time when fueled by an external source of energy. The contributors also examine molecules, nanoscale objects and materials that can produce mechanical work based on molecular machines. Additionally, the book explores living supramolecular polymers that can be trapped in kinetically stable states, as well as out-of-equilibrium chemical networks and oscillators that are important to understand the emergence of complex behaviors and, in particular, the origin of life. This important book: Offers comprehensive coverage of fields from design of out-of-equilibrium self-assemblies to molecular machines and active materials Presents information on a highly emerging and interdisciplinary topic Includes contributions from internationally renowned scientists Written for chemists, physical chemists, biochemists, material scientists, Out-of-Equilibrium (Supra)molecular Systems and Materials is an indispensable resource written by top scientists in the field.
