The 6-carbon lactone known as ascorbic acid (vitamin C) is an important water-soluble vitamin. It is essential for preserving optimal health and it is used by the body for many purposes, including collagen biosynthesis, melanin reduction and enhanced immunity. This book addresses some important issues related to various methods which are employed to encapsulate asorbic acid. A comparation of the characteristics of ascorbic acid nano and microparticles prepared by different methods is also given. Furthermore, the biomedical significance of human vitamin C metabolism is examined, in the light of polymorphisms in xenobiotic enzymes deduced from genetic, biochemical and epidemiological results to estimate optimal nutrition. Additionally, Vitamin C exerts a protective role against some types of cancer. For that reason, this book investigates the protective effect of vitamin C. Possible pro- and antioxidant effects of vitamin C is also presented and their extrapolation on human health is discussed. Other chapters in this book include a review of the role of vitamin C in the physiology of several diseases, good dietary sources of vitamin C, a study of the effects of environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) on vitamin C status in exposed populations and the role of vitamin C in human reproduction and its effect on people who suffer from epileptic seizures.

The function of the painted wooden object ranges from the practical to the profound. A knowledge of clay is important in many spheres of scientific endeav our, particularly in natural sciences such as geology, mineralogy and soil science, but also in more applied areas like environmental and mater ials science. Over the last two decades research into clay mineralogy has been strongly influenced by the development and application of a num ber of spectroscopic techniques which are now able to yield information about clay materials at a level of detail that previously would have seemed inconceivable. This information relates not only to the precise characterization of the individual clay components themselves, but also to the ways in which these components interact with a whole range of absorbate molecules. At present, however, the fruits of this research are to be found principally in a somewhat widely dispersed form in the scientific journals, and it was thus considered to be an appropriate time to bring together a compilation of these spectroscopic techniques in a way which would make them more accessible to the non-specialist. This is the primary aim of this book. The authors of the various chapters first describe the principles and instrumentation of the individual spectro scopic techniques, assuming a minimum of prior knowledge, and then go on to show how these methods have been usefully applied to clay mineralogy in its broadest context.

These ten essays, written over a period from 1950 to 1962, are bound together by their common concern with questions of the meaning of criticism and the larger meaning of literature itself. These difficult questions W.K. Wimsatt treats with characteristic wit and penetration, ranging easily from a broad consideration of principles to incisive comment on individual writers and works. The first part of the book is devoted to a discussion of literary theory. Wimsatt reviews the development of critical dialectic from the German romanticism of Schelling and the Schlegels to the mythopeic bravura of Northrop Frye. Himself a classical ironist, he nevertheless exposes here some of the extravagances of the ironic principle as flourished by the systematic Prometheans. The second and third parts contain essays on more particular topics: the meaning of "symbolism," Aristotle's doctrines of the tragic plot and catharsis, the theory of comic laughter, and the objective reading of English meters. Here too are extended comment on particular writers—a study of the imagination of James Boswell, an analysis of the comedy of T. S. Eliot in The Cocktail Party, and a contrast in the handling of similar themes by Tennyson and Eliot. The fourth part is a comprehensive statement of the demands and opportunities confronting the critic in his or her role as teacher.
