Testosterone makes us stronger, happier, and smarter. It also makes us meaner, more violent and more selfish. A scientific look into the vast and unexpected influence testosterone has on our behavior, our society, and our bodies. The brain of every man—and every woman—is shaped by this tiny molecule from before birth: it propels our drive for exploration and risk, for competition and creation, and even our survival. The effects of testosterone permeate the traditions, philosophy, and literature of every known culture—without it, the world would be a drastically different place. Testosterone also has a role in humanity's darker side, contributing to violence, hubris, poverty, crime, and selfishness. Recent revelations of the science of testosterone show that high levels will deplete compassion and generosity, and even reduce the affection we show our children. In The Virility Paradox, internationally renowned oncologist and prostate cancer researcher Charles Ryan explores this complex chemical system responsible for a diverse spectrum of human behaviors and health in both men and women. Ryan taps his vast experience treating prostate cancer with testosterone-lowering therapy, observing that this often leads to profound changes in the patients' perspectives on their lives and relationships. Often, for the better. Ryan uses the journeys of these patients and others to illustrate the vast and sometimes unexpected influence testosterone has on human lives. Through the stories of real men and women, he also explores the connections between testosterone and conditions like dementia, autism, and cancer, as well as the biological underpinnings of sexual assault and the effects it has on everything from crime to investing to everyday choices we make. Integrating the molecular and the medical, sociology and storytelling, The Virility Paradox;offers a fascinating look at how one hormone has shaped history, and the connections between our biology, our behavior, and our best selves.

"An extraordinary book. Mohamed Amer Meziane's breathtaking analysis of the making of fossil states opens to a new genre of history writing where the very layers of earth's riches are at its center." —Ann Laura Stoler, author of Carnal Knowledge and Imperial Power, Along the Archival Grain How the disenchantment of empire led to climate change While industrial states competed to colonize Asia and Africa in the nineteenth century, conversion to Christianity was replaced by a civilizing mission. This new secular impetus strode hand in hand with racial capitalism in the age of empires: a terrestrial paradise was to be achieved through accumulation and the ravaging of nature. Far from a defence of religion, The States of the Earth argues that phenomena such as evangelism and political Islam are best understood as products of empire and secularization. In a world where material technology was considered divine, religious and secular forces both tried to achieve Heaven on Earth by destroying Earth itself.

The Intersexes: A History of Similisexualism as a Problem in Social Life (1906) is a work of nonfiction by Edward Irenaeus Prime-Stevenson. Written while Prime-Stevenson was living as an expatriate in Europe, The Intersexes is a defense of homosexuality grounded in scientific and historical research. Throughout his career, Prime-Stevenson sought to dispel falsehoods surrounding the history and social acceptance of homosexuality. Writing under the pseudonym Xavier Mayne, Prime-Stevenson took great care to insulate himself from the reprisal common to the period in which he worked. Despite his limited audience—copies of his works numbered in the hundreds—Prime-Stevenson is now recognized as a pioneering advocate for the rights of the LGBTQ community. “Between a protozoan and the most perfect development of the mammalia, we trace a succession of dependent intersteps...A trilobite is at one end of Nature's workshop: a Spinoza, a Shakespeare, a Beethoven is at the other. [...] Why have we set up masculinity and femininity as processes that have not perfectly logical and respectable inter-steps?” Seeking to defend homosexuality as a natural result of human evolution, Prime-Stevenson offers his theory of intersexes, of which he identifies two while leaving room for more to be defined in the future. To do so, he rejects the binary of masculine and feminine, both of which fail to describe the vast majority of humanity, in favor of a broader spectrum of sexual identity. Using the terms Uranian and Uraniad, which align with gay and lesbian respectively, Prime-Stevenson attempts to define these types, call attention to historical examples, and critique the societal condemnation and persecution of such individuals as “degenerate” or “criminal.” This groundbreaking study, perhaps the first to approach homosexuality from a scientific, historical, personal, and legal point of view, is recognized today as a landmark in queer literature by academics around the world. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Edward Irenaeus Prime-Stevenson’s The Intersexes: A History of Similisexualism as a Problem in Social Life is a classic work of queer literature reimagined for modern readers.

An unidentified virus is decimating the world. A highly ranked government scientist who had previously warned against such a potential peril is quick to recognize its virulence and the devastation it could cause. He convinces the president of the US to isolate all units of the Navy currently at sea and urgently trasfer equipment and scientists to these vessels to commence development of a cure. The world is rapidly succumbing to the pandemic except for one city, the most isolated capital city in the world, where early advice enabled the government to close down all trasport links (rail, road, air and sea). This effectively quarantined the population, though not without some necessary harsh actions. Aware that this city could not maintain its unifected status without armed forces assistance, the US navy ships are ordered there immediately and placed under command of its government. This decision benefits the US fleet as they could not remain at sea for the duration required to develop a cure, so this secure land base was vital if mankind was to have a future. Quick responses from the UK and France allowed some of their ships to set sail before they too were decimated. Although there are problems with their vessels they too join the US ships and place themselves under command of the local government. The search for a cure is not the only priority, as many isolated communities around the world have made contact with the city seeking urgent assistance. Helping these people was of vital importance if mankind was to be saved. But anarchy reigned where survivors with a natural immunity to the virus had reverted to a dark ages mentality at an alarmingly rapid rate; gangs roamed the streets, taking what they wanted and raiding communities that had managed to isolate themselves from the plague. Realising that when and if a cure is found, this city will be the most powerful force left in the world, the politics of the future must be decided... Meanwhile, at city offices, the Premier of the state is desperately organizing an authority that supersedes all previous levels of government to overcome the bureaucratic quagmire that has arisen. Actions must be rapidly approved and carried out in this time of crisis, so to that end, and based mainly on a strong sense of perception, he appoints an unusual young man to this senior position.
