A Ukrainian rebel. Three generations of women bearing the consequences. A journey that changes everything. When Ivanna opens the door to uniformed officers, her tranquil life is torn to pieces - leaving behind a broken woman who must learn to endure cold, starvation, and the memories of a man who died in the quintessential act of betrayal. Using her thrift, ingenuity, and a bit of luck, she finds a way to survive in Soviet Ukraine, along with her daughter, Yevtsye. But the question remains, will she be strong enough to withstand her daughter's deceit and the eventual downfall of the nation she has devoted her life to? Or will the memories of her late husband act as a shadow haunting everyone and everything she loves, including Ionna, the granddaughter that never knew him? In Sunflowers Beneath the Snow, Teri M Brown explores the tenacity of women, showing that even in grueling circumstances, they can, and do, experience all the good things life has to offer - compassion, joy, love, faith, and wonder.

Memoirs of an Orthodox Jew (née Einhorn) from Szombathely. In 1942 she married Yaakov Klein from Ujhely, and they settled in Budapest. Yaakov found work in a textile firm. Soon after the Nazi occupation in March 1944, one day Rivka met Károly Bitter, whose wife Magda worked in Yaakov's firm. The Bitters were Catholics who offered to help the Kleins. Károly himself went into the countryside and brought one of Rivka's sisters and later a brother of hers (who he smuggled out of a ghetto) to Budapest. Rivka gave birth to a daughter in May 1944. The Bitters also had a little daughter. When roundups and deportations of Jews began, the Bitters took the Kleins and ten of their relatives to hide in the their own apartment. Later, the Bitters got another place to live and gave their apartment to the Klein and Einhorn family. Rivka, her husband, and her sister and brother had false papers and could go out to do errands and shopping. The others had to remain silent and indoors all the time. Presents a detailed description of what life was like for hidden Jews, and specifically Orthodox Jews, during the German occupation. When the war ended, the Kleins and Einhorns discovered that almost all the residents of their apartment building were Jews in hiding (all of them had been pretending to be good fascists and Catholics), and that it was built by a wealthy Jewish architect in 1942 specifically for the purpose of hiding his family. All of the residents of this building survived. However, other members of the two families were deported to Auschwitz and murdered. The Kleins later emigrated to New York.

At Big Bass Lake and Mobile Homes, a development "planted in the hill and abandoned like a crop gone bad," whiskey-soaked Weezal Peterson has worked hard to forget his past-and largely succeeded. Over the course of the story, several intertwining narratives-including a young woman's search for a husband after being accused of murdering the previous two; the meteoric rise of a colonial-era ink company; and the wavering convictions of a failed writer and farmer who expresses his despair by cooking fragrant meatballs-come crashing together in a rural Pennsylvania trailer park. In the conflagration, Weezal's history, and his future, are revealed to both the reader and to Weezal himself. Smart and sweet, poetic and wild-and delectably raunchy-A Smile Shy spares us none of the details of these characters' sorrows and horrors: poverty and addiction, loneliness and domestic violence. And yet every page is infused with both a crackling humor and an immense tenderness.
