This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the Second International Conference on Subject-Oriented Business Process Management, S-BPM ONE 2010, held in Karlsruhe, Germany in October 2010. The 10 revised full papers presented together with one invited keynote paper and three panel statements were carefully reviewed and selected from initially 17 submissions. The papers present innovative cross-disciplinary ideas, concepts, methods, tools and results in foundational and applied research as well as studies on the realization of such innovations in the real world - all based on the promising new paradigm of subject-oriented business process management.
Activities performed in organizations are coordinated via communication between the people involved. The sentences used to communicate are naturally structured by subject, verb, and object. The subject describes the actor, the verb the action and the object what is affected by the action. Subject-oriented Business Process Management (S-BPM) as presented in this book is based on this simple structure which enables process-oriented thinking and process modeling. S-BPM puts the subject of a process at the center of attention and thus deals with business processes and their organizational environment from a new perspective, meeting organizational requirements in a much better way than traditional approaches. Subjects represent agents of an action in a process, which can be either technical or human (e.g. a thread in an IT system or a clerk). A process structures the actions of each subject and coordinates the required communication among the subjects. S-BPM provides a coherent procedural framework to model and analyze business processes: its focus is the cooperation of all stakeholders involved in the strategic, tactical, and operational issues, sharing their knowledge in a networked structure. The authors illustrate how each modeling activity through the whole development lifecycle can be supported through the use of appropriate software tools. The presentation style focuses on professionals in industry, and on students specializing in process management or organizational modeling. Each chapter begins with a summary of key findings and is full of examples, hints, and possible pitfalls. An interpreter model, a toolbox, and a glossary summarizing the main terms complete the book. In this book, Mathias Weske details the complete business process lifecycle from process modeling to process enactment and process evaluation. After starting with the general foundations and abstractions in business process management, he introduces process modeling languages and process choreographies, as well as formal properties of processes and data. This volume contains a selection of papers from the First Workshop on Subject- Oriented Business Process Management (S-BPM ONE). Establishing a multi- and cross-disciplinary interchange of underyling and applied concepts, successful appli- tion studies, and innovative development ideas, the workshop emphasized the pro- tive realization of role- or actor-oriented modeling on the basis of exchanging m- sages when accomplishing tasks. The workshop was organized as a forum for the discussion of foundations, achievements, reflections, and further developments. In this way, its contributions not only addressed the current state of the art, but also the various lines of research and development, either running or planned. The state of the art is reflected in terms of concepts, modeling language, and tool features on the one hand. On the other hand, it is reflected through the discussion of industrial case studies. These indicate the current practice when implementing the subject-oriented BPM paradigm in industrial settings. By challenging conceptual foundations they also allow us to define a common ground for future developments in research and practice. The S-BPM ONE contributions focus on challenges arising from the evolution of service-oriented architectures and the need for more flexible business organizations. The latter require coherent and adaptive representation and processing techniques for business process modeling and execution. Corresponding technologies have to be grounded in theories of computer science, in order to provide an adequate infrastr- ture for thorough BPM including technology-enhanced change management.

An introduction to the modeling of business information systems, with processes formally modeled using Petri nets.
