The RadPhi Collaboration has proposed using the intense tagged photon beam in Hall B at TJNAF to produce [phi] mesons and measure the branching ratios of [phi]'s decaying into the a0(980)g and f0(980)[gamma] all-neutral final states. The comparison of branching ratios for these two decay modes should provide crucial information on the quark substructure of a0(980) and f0(980) scalar mesons. Three engineering runs conducted so far measured the photon beam profile, instantaneous rates, pileups and dead times in the detector components, as well as energy and timing resolutions of RadPhi detectors. The measurements demonstrated that the proposed experiment is capable of detecting rare radiative [phi] decays with branching ratios greater than 10−5.

This volume contains lectures presented at the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Annual Hampton University Graduate Studies at the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (HUGS at CEBAF) Summer Schools. The HUGS summer school brings pedagogical lectures to graduate students who are working on doctoral theses in nuclear physics. It has a balance of theory and experiment, and lecturers address topics of high current interest in strong interaction physics, particularly in electron scattering. Many HUGS lecturers lead major experimental efforts, and are internationally renowned for their contributions to the field. The proceedings have been selected for coverage in: . OCo Index to Scientific & Technical Proceedings (ISTP CDROM version / ISI Proceedings). OCo CC Proceedings OCo Engineering & Physical Sciences."

We present a vector dominance model to describe radiative decays involving the light scalar mesons. Assuming that the light scalar mesons form a nonet this model gives relations among various decay amplitudes of the form S--> gamma gamma, V-->Sgamma and S--> Vgamma, where S and V denote scalar and vector mesons. By comparing with experimental radiative decay rates, including those recently measured for phi--> PP'gamma, we obtain various predictions. We discuss briefly ongoing extensions of the present work in an attempt to describe the radiative phi decay measurements in detail.

The MARK III Collaboration has studied the OZI violating radiative decay J/psi .-->. .gamma. phi .omega., in order to complete the set of measured J/psi .-->. .gamma. vector vector decays. This channel is then used to search for a new decay mode of the xi(2330) and to study the eta/sub c/ decay mechanism. The phi .omega. mass spectrum does not show any significant structure; upper limits for the excitation of the xi and eta/sub c/ particles are obtained. 11 refs., 3 figs.

We summarize some features of the vector meson dominance model which was recently proposed for studying radiative decays involving the scalar mesons. Using the experimental values of {Gamma}(a{sub 0} {yields} {gamma}{gamma}), {Gamma}(f{sub 0} {yields} {gamma}{gamma}) and {Gamma}({phi} {yields} a{sub 0} {gamma}) as inputs, we show that the model predicts a large hierarchy between {Gamma}(a{sub 0} {yields} {omega}{gamma}) and {Gamma}(a{sub 0} {yields} {rho}{gamma}) as well as between {Gamma}(f{sub 0} {yields} {omega}{gamma}) and {Gamma}(f{sub 0} {yields} {rho}{gamma}).
