DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Studies in Philosophy and Theology The essays which follow are, as the title denotes, studies, which, from time to time, during the years of professional life, have engaged the writers attention, and occupied his most thoughtful hours. Many of them have been already published in the Bibliotheca Sacra, and elsewhere. The themes discussed are how ever, for the most part, of permanent interest; and as such, the discussions have a value as contributions to philosophical and theological science. For the con venience of many, especially my former pupils in Col lege and Seminary, these essays are now gathered into a volume, with such notes as seemed to be required. DOWNLOAD EBOOKA highly engaging essay that will draw students into a conversation about the vital relationship between philosophy and theology. In this clear, concise, and brilliantly engaging essay, renowned philosopher and theologian John D. Caputo addresses the great and classical philosophical questions as they inextricably intersect with theology--past, present, and future. Recognized as one of the leading philosophers, Caputo is peerless in introducing and initiating students into the vital relationship that philosophy and theology share together. He writes, “If you take a long enough look, beyond the debates that divide philosophy and theology, over the walls that they have built to keep each other out or beyond the wars to subordinate one to the other, you find a common sense of awe, a common gasp of surprise or astonishment, like looking out at the endless sprawl of stars across the evening sky or upon the waves of a midnight sea.”

DOWNLOAD EBOOKWith some exceptions, there is not a real interest in Islamic philosophy and t- ology in Western institutions today. This largely ignored area has the potential to present enlightening insights into the development of the Western thought and to contribute to contemporary discussions in philosophy and theology in general. Scholars working in Islamic thought usually focus on its medieval background and consider it to be mainly of a historical interest and far away from the intellectual world of today. Showing its contemporary relevance is an important task by which the status of Islamic philosophy can be elevated to its proper station. By considering these points in mind, the University of Kentucky organized an international graduate student conference on Islamic philosophy and the- ogy with an emphasis on its contemporary relevance which was held between the 28th and 30th September 2007. This book emerged out of the conf- ence by adding more chapters relevant to the main theme of the book. This book presents analyses and discussions of different topics in Islamic philo- phy and theology by relating them to contemporary debates and ideas in four main areas: epistemology, metaphysics, philosophy of religion and value t- ory. There are ten chapters in sum. Some of the chapters are written by graduate students and some of them by experienced scholars. Each chapter presents c- siderable insight into its relevant topic but does not represent the opinion of anybody except the author.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe debate between faith and reason has been a dominant feature of Western thought for more than two millennia. This book takes up the problem of the relation between philosophy and theology and proposes that this relation can be reconceived if both philosophy and theology are seen as different ways of organising affects. Brent Adkins and Paul R. Hinlicky break new ground in this timely debate in two ways. Firstly, they lay bare the contemporary dependence on Kant and propose that our Kantian inheritance leaves us with an insuperable dualism. Secondly, the authors argue that the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze provides a way of resolving the debate between faith and reason that does justice to philosophy and theology by reconceiving of both as assemblages. Deleuze's philosophy differentiates domains of thought in terms of what they create. This seems like a particularly fruitful way to pursue the problem of the relations among philosophy and theology because it allows their distinction without at the same time placing them in opposition to one another.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKAnders Nygren has for years been recognized as a leading contemporary theologian. His major work, Agape and Eros, has become a classic of theological research. And though he has been comparatively little known in this country, these critical essays which scrutinize Professor Nygren's philosophical and theological theses on such subjects as motif research, meanings of love, systematic theology, and philosophy of religion attest to the importance given to his work by scholars and theologians throughout the world. The illumination given Nygren's thought by this close examination is further enhanced by his "Intellectual Autobiography" and by his "Reply to Interpreters and Critics," a commentary and defense in response to the essays, written by Professor Nygren for this volume. In addition, the volume includes a complete bibliography of Nygren's publications, covering his entire career and listing all translations of his works.
