Excerpt from Browning Studies These Browning Studies were given in Oberlin College, in the Department of English in the course on Nineteenth Century Poetry, in the second semester of the year 1908-09, and were repeated in the corresponding semester of the year1909-10. They constituted a course in the Summer Session of Middlebury College in 1913, and were given here again as a part of the study of Nineteenth Century Poetry in the second semester of the year 1913-14. It should be explained also that the greater part of the study of The Ring and the Book was written before those Oberlin days, and that since those days Bishop Blougram's Apology, A Death in the Desert, and Reverie have been added to the list of poems taken up; also that, besides being used in connection with the college classes mentioned above, several of the lectures have been given in various places. The interest taken by the students in these studies has suggested their publication. They are now printed as given in the classroom, with some revision. Abbreviations are written out more than in the author's notes, but no attempt has been made to reproduce the extemporaneous elaboration and explanation given in the classroom. Lectures which occupied several classroom hours are here sometimes combined into a single chapter. These studies do not pretend to be exhaustive. They are simply an introduction to some of Browning's best work. They are intended now, as they were in the classroom, for those who have not read Browning at all before, or very little. Excerpt from Stories From Browning These studies are in no sense meant to be a substitute for the poems they sketch. They are intended for a stimulus and a help; and if, to any degree, they succeed in introducing the reader to Browning himself and in clearing away the cryptic and esoteric atmosphere which too much surrounds the conception of his genius in the popular mind, they have not been written in vain. Excerpt from The Best of Browning Mr. Hamilton W. Mabie, including and expounding Browning's Saul under the head of Aids to the Devout Life, records this testimony: A gifted and ardent woman once said that when everything else failed she reread Saul, and then she heard once more the clear tone of faith call ing through the darkness as the song of the shepherd boy ralled to King Saul in the blackness of his despair. Excerpt from Inductive Studies in Browning: For Secondary Schools, Colleges and Literature Clubs It is suggested that the poems which are too long for one lesson be not divided, but be taken as a whole two or three times, and that the student be required to answer, for each lesson, as many of the entire set of questions as he can. With these few remarks I confide the book to the favor of those who have used it in the past and to the kindness of those who are striving to get the young people of our land into companionship with the greater poets of our literature.
