Living in the Roman world of the fourth century could be very challenging. It was a time of change and danger. Barbarians were attacking the empire from all directions. At sea, no ship was safe from pirates. From the east, the Sasanian Empire from Persia was once more challenging the power of Rome. Even religion was changing. The new Christian religion was spreading throughout the empire. But which Christian beliefs were to be accepted? Constantine settled the problem by calling the Council of Nicaea. His mother, Helena, would contribute much to the new religion. The story is told by a large cast of characters that represent people from different backgrounds: soldiers, slaves, religious people, and beautiful women. The main character is Julia, the daughter of a retired Roman soldier whose estate in the south of Gaul produced grapes and olive oil. As a young girl, she got the Strike of Venus when playing the game of talus bones. This assured her of a charmed life. Then one day, she, her father, and her slave left by ship with wine for Constantines new city in the east. She met a handsome young officer of the Imperial Navy who was to protect her from pirates. Other characters include Antaios from Alexandria, who tried being a monk in Upper Egypt; Meirit, a beautiful Jewish woman who would steal his heart; Belisar the Manichaen, who fought the Sasanians; and Puglius, the slave, who would steal from his mistress, murder his family, and then become a Christian. Also included is how Helena found the tabulum, which was affixed to the cross of Jesus, and what she did with it. This and many more fascinating stories are included in the book.

This series of personal histories is an account of the humans who had survived the ice age that followed an apocalyptic series of events in old time 2194. The story is written by Hairy Pig and his friend, Lyllia, about twenty four thousand years after the end of the first try at human civilization. There were six surviving groups of humans that survived in a variety of manners ranging from living in underground mining galleries to caves to unknown methods of survival. There are three of the groups of survivors that have no idea where they came from.Hairy Pig has been requested to write the story, or personal historical observations, by his great friend Beatrice to help shed some light on these survival stories. He has decided to continue his accounts of the survival of humans on the Mother Earth with contemporary accounts. This contemporary account was inspired by the events on the Southern Land Mass and contains firsthand accounts by all of the Tsitsistas involved. Interviews were used for other participants. Hairy Pig has wrapped the story of the Kulum around the first interplanetary trip by humans. The Little Princess was launched from Mother Earth to travel to Venus on 23,673.13.14. This is the eleventh volume in the series.

"The Transit of Venus is one of the great English-language novels of the twentieth century." - The Paris Review Finalist for the National Book Award Winner of the National Book Critics' Circle Award The award-winning, New York Times bestselling literary masterpiece of Shirley Hazzard—the story of two beautiful orphan sisters whose fates are as moving and wonderful, and yet as predestined, as the transits of the planets themselves The Transit of Venus is considered Shirley Hazzard's most brilliant novel. It tells the story of two orphan sisters, Caroline and Grace Bell, as they leave Australia to start a new life in post-war England. What happens to these young women--seduction and abandonment, marriage and widowhood, love and betrayal--becomes as moving and wonderful and yet as predestined as the transits of the planets themselves. Gorgeously written and intricately constructed, Hazzard's novel is a story of place: Sydney, London, New York, Stockholm; of time: from the fifties to the eighties; and above all, of women and men in their passage through the displacements and absurdities of modern life.

The thesis of the Strike! Series of books is that the various paranormal phenomena that humans have reported over time are real. I have written the story of the fictional Tsitsistas People as if all of the stories of ghosts, mind reading, intuition, spiritual life after death, telekinesis, out-of-body experiences, apparitions, guardian angels, premonitions, and etcetera, reported by humans over the millennia are not only true, but can be controlled with the proper training of a human mind. The fictional Tsitsistas people learn to harness the true power of the human mind over a very long period of time. I hope to have described the development as a logical evolution of human abilities, like the variations of human speech or the ability for the human mind to solve complex problems.

Jeremy Brecher’s Strike! narrates the dramatic story of repeated, massive, and sometimes violent revolts by ordinary working people in America. Involving nationwide general strikes, the seizure of vast industrial establishments, nonviolent direct action on a massive scale, and armed battles with artillery and tanks, this exciting hidden history is told from the point of view of the rank-and-file workers who lived it. Encompassing the repeated repression of workers’ rebellions by company-sponsored violence, local police, state militias, and the U.S. Army and National Guard, it reveals a dimension of American history rarely found in the usual high school or college history course. Since its original publication in 1972, no book has done as much as Strike! to bring U.S. labor history to a wide audience. Now this fiftieth anniversary edition brings the story up to date with chapters covering the “mini-revolts of the twenty-first century,” including Occupy Wall Street and the Fight for Fifteen. The new edition contains over a hundred pages of new materials and concludes by examining a wide range of current struggles, ranging from #BlackLivesMatter, to the great wave of teachers’ strikes “for the soul of public education,” to the global “Student Strike for Climate” that may be harbingers of mass strikes to come.
