An insider's guide to discovering the world's best urban art. From amazing wall murals to Banksy's stencils and Invader's mosaics, we showcase 140 creative hotspots across 42 cities and tell you how to find them, as well as introduce pioneering artists and interview those who shaped the movement. Street art is now present in almost every city, town and village in the world, from Aachen to Zwolle. Its true audience is measured in the billions. And given that the first record of homo sapiens painting on walls is thought to date back around 40,000 years, it's surprising that street art has taken so long to flourish. Today, the proliferation of legal walls and organised festivals around the world makes it possible to encounter thought-provoking, transformative art in the most unexpected of places. This visual guide to the world of street art takes in the scene in over 40 cities and includes interviews with some of the most prolific and well-known street artists, including Blek le Rat, FAILE and Faith47. And with hundreds of locations plotted and a special focus on 15 of the world's most incredible street art festivals, this guide will help you discover artworks hidden in plain sight around the world. How hip-hop culture and graffiti electrified the art of Jean-Michel Basquiat and his contemporaries in 1980s New York In the early 1980s, art and writing labeled as graffiti began to transition from New York City walls and subway trains onto canvas and into art galleries. Young artists who freely sampled from their urban experiences and their largely Black, Latinx and immigrant histories infused the downtown art scene with expressionist, pop and graffiti-inspired compositions. Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-88) became the galvanizing, iconic frontrunner of this transformational and insurgent movement in contemporary American art, which resulted in an unprecedented fusion of creative energies that defied longstanding racial divisions. Writing the Future features Basquiat's works in painting, sculpture, drawing, video, music and fashion, alongside works by his contemporaries--and sometimes collaborators--A-One, ERO, Fab 5 Freddy, Futura, Keith Haring, Kool Koor, LA2, Lady Pink, Lee QuiƱones, Rammellzee and Toxic. Throughout the 1980s, these artists fueled new directions in fine art, design and music, reshaping the predominantly white art world and driving the now-global popularity of hip-hop culture. Writing the Future, published to accompany a major exhibition, contextualizes Basquiat's work in relation to his peers associated with hip-hop culture. It also marks the first time Basquiat's extensive, robust and reflective portraiture of his Black and Latinx friends and fellow artists has been given prominence in scholarship on his oeuvre. With contributions from Carlo McCormick, Liz Munsell, Hua Hsu, J. Faith Almiron and Greg Tate, Writing the Future captures the energy, inventiveness and resistance unleashed when hip-hop hit the city.

From Paris to L.A., London to Bergen, Sao Paulo to Vienna, and many more, no one has quite captured the strangeness, heroism, frustration or surreal quality of the coronavirus pandemic quite like the world's street artists. This brilliant small volume features the best examples: heroic nurses, lovers refusing to let COVID cool their passion, strange edicts from government, presidential recommendations featuring disinfectant, feelings of entrapment and longing for freedom... These artworks aren't just a fantastic take on the pandemic, but really capture the whole range of emotions that the world has lived through. Fine art isn't up to the task of defining this era. Street artists have taken on that mantle and have done it brilliantly.

Street Art, Book Art follows on from 2014's acclaimed Street Art, Fine Art--a collection of classic works of fine art reinterpreted by some of today's most cutting-edge street artists. Following the acclaimed publication of 2014's Street Art, Fine Art which documented the pioneering works and ethos of the Dulwich Outdoor Gallery project, 15 of the original 17 artists involved accepted the commission by its author and curator Ingrid Beazley to produce a series of unique artworks on copies of the book with blank covers. Some artists subverted the medium as a space to blend illustratively their style within the conventions of book design, some utilised the uniform shape to create a series of parallel works, whilst others approached the book as any other blank canvas presented to them on the street. Street Art, Book Art catalogues in full the exhibition of these works in June 2015, and serves as unique document of a diverse and fascinating series of approaches to a single blank space.
