They stand practically as they were written. They are published in the hope that the lessons of my experience may, in however slight a degree, serve to help my countrymen engaged in the difficult task of guiding the nation in the critical times that are ahead of us. I do not claim for my opinions that they are in every respect right. It is only claimed for them that they are the convictions of an honest mind, truly anxious for his country's good. I have done my best to be fair to those with whom I have been unable to agree. If perchance I have in any case strayed from this ideal, I may be forgiven. It has not been intentional. It was my original desire to have this memoir published after my death. I have decided in favour of the present publication in deference to friends to whom I had shown the manuscript.
