DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis book discusses the properties of quantized vortex lines in superfluid helium-4 in the light of research on vortices in modern fluid mechanics, and gives the first comprehensive treatment of the problem. The author's comprehensive approach will make this book invaluable for students taking advanced undergraduate or graduate courses, and for all those involved in research on classical and quantum vortices.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis book springs from the programme Quantized Vortex Dynamics and Sup- ?uid Turbulence held at the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences (University of Cambridge) in August 2000. What motivated the programme was the recognition that two recent developments have moved the study of qu- tized vorticity, traditionally carried out within the low-temperature physics and condensed-matter physics communities, into a new era. The ?rst development is the increasing contact with classical ?uid dynamics and its ideas and methods. For example, some current experiments with - lium II now deal with very classical issues, such as the measurement of velocity spectra and turbulence decay rates. The evidence from these experiments and many others is that super?uid turbulence and classical turbulence share many features. The challenge is now to explain these similarities and explore the time scales and length scales over which they hold true. The observed classical aspects have also attracted attention to the role played by the ?ow of the normal ?uid, which was somewhat neglected in the past because of the lack of direct ?ow visualization. Increased computing power is also making it possible to study the coupled motion of super?uid vortices and normal ?uids. Another contact with classical physics arises through the interest in the study of super?uid vortex - connections. Reconnections have been studied for some time in the contexts of classical ?uid dynamics and magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD), and it is useful to learn from the experience acquired in other ?elds.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe study of quantum fluids in three dimensions has been an important area for many years as it embraces Bose-Einstein condensation, superfluidity and macroscopic quantisation. These are fundamental aspects of physics which can be studied in liquid 4He. In contrast, quantum fluids in two dimension is more recent and less developed. Nevertheless it has shown many interesting phenomena including a rich variety of phases and the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. Intermediate between these dimensions are the restricted geometries of micro porous materials into which He may be introduced. The main quantum materials considered are 4He, 3He, D2, H2, H and electrons on the surface of 4He. The superfluid phases of 3He were excluded, e~cept for superfluid film flow, as 3He involves a separate set of problems. These proceedings arise from a lively Advanced Research Workshop on Excitations in Two-Dimensional and Three-Dimensional Quantum Fluids held in Exeter 10-15 August 1990. Fifty scientists took part and each provided a written contribution. Perhaps it is a testimony to the discussions that several papers were revised by the authors after the meeting. The order of the chapters is the same as the presentations at the workshop. This arrangement starts with 4He in three dimensions which establishes a base from which the two dimensional properties can be viewed. At the end of each section there is a report on the discussion session. These are interesting and useful chapters as they clarify points made in the papers and define the boundary of current understanding.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe 1989 Cryogenic Engineering Conference, meeting jointly with the International Cryogenic Materials Conference, was held on the campus of the University of California, Los Angeles from July 24 to 28. Professor T.H.K. Frederking was the conference chairman. The Conference had previously met at U.C.L.A. in 1962 and 1969. A special symposium, "A Half Century of Superfluid Helium," was a significant part of the program of CEC-89. We were especially fortunate to have Professor Jack Allen of the University of St. Andrews, Scotland present at the Conference; his paper, "Early Superfluidity in Cambridge, 1936 to 1939," was a delightful, often humorous account of the early experimental work with superfluid helium. Professors V.L. Ginzburg and J.L. Olesen could not be present for the Symposium, but provided papers which are published in these proceedings. The late Bill Fairbank, responding graciously to a last-minute invitation from Professor Frederking, presented a wonderful account of superfluid research in the United States in the post-war years.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe long-term goal of this project is to study the nucleation of quantized vortices in helium II by investigating the behavior of rotating droplets of helium II in a reduced gravity environment. The objective of this ground-based research grant was to develop new experimental techniques to aid in accomplishing that goal. The development of an electrostatic levitator for superfluid helium, described below, and the successful suspension of charged superfluid drops in modest electric fields was the primary focus of this work. Other key technologies of general low temperature use were developed and are also discussed. Donnelly, Russell J. Glenn Research Center

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis book discusses the unique properties of superfluid phases of 3He, the condensed matter with the outmost broken symmetry, which combine in a surprising way the properties of ordered magnets, liquid crystals and superfluids. The complicated vacuum state of these phases with a large number of fermionic and bosonic quasiparticles and topological objects remains the vacuum in modern quantum field theories. Some of the objects and physical phenomena in 3He have strong analogy with the neutrino, W-bosons, weak interactions, gravity, chiral anomaly, Quantum Hall Effect and fractional statistics. As an example of topological objects, the quantized vortices in 3He phases are discussed in detail, including singular and continuous vortices, half-quantum vortices, broken symmetry in the vortex core and phase transitions between the vortex states with different symmetry and topology.
