The Stanley family descends from William De Stonely (1170-1230) who was the ancestor of the Earls of Stanley. Members of the early family inter-married with other noble British families. One of the descendants of the Earls of Stanley was Thomas Stanley (ca. 1666) who immigrated to Virginia. He was the father of at least three sons. One of his sons, James Stanley (1688-1754) married Catherine Hutchins and became the father of eight children. Descendants lived in Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee and other parts of the United States.
