DOWNLOAD EBOOKNone of the Fathers of the early church is better known or loved than St John Chrysostom, and none of his works is more popular than On the Priesthood. Its stylistic brilliance demonstrates the appropriateness of St John's enduring title, "the golden-mouthed." Yet the rhetorical eloquence of the work is not simply camouflage for lack of substance. As Graham Neville observes in his Introduction, Chrysostom "had a mind both practical and idealistic, that brought into close connection the evils and injustices of the world and the perfection of moral life demanded by the gospel." Chrysostom's unique gift for linking concrete observation and theological vision is nowhere more evident than in On the Priesthood. Its presence helps to account for the work's power to inspire and challenge Christians in all ages. Book jacket.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKJohn Chrysostom, or "Golden Mouth", was a famous ascetic and preacher of the fourth/fifth century, a controversial bishop of Constantinople, and a brilliant orator - hence the epithet. This is the first comprehensive study of him in the English language in over a century. In the early chapters John Kelly highlights Chrysostom's youthful experiments with asceticism at Antioch in Syria, his six years as a monk and then a recluse in the nearby mountains, and his influential role as Antioch's leading preacher. The central section of the book shows him as a fearlessly outspoken populist bishop of the capital. Kelly focuses on his authoritarian style, his interventions in political crises, and his clashes with the Empress Eudoxia, as well as his efforts to promote the primacy of the see of Constantinople in the east. The final chapters reconstruct the plots that led to Chrysostom's downfall, the drama of his trial, and his exile and death. Golden Mouth also provides fresh analyses of Chrysostom's principal treatises and public addresses, and discussions of his views on monasticism, sexuality and marriage, education, and suffering.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKSt. John Chrysotom has left us as many as two hundred and fifty homilies on the Epistles of St. Paul, which are generally considered to constitute the finest commentary ever written on the Epistles of the apostle of the Gentiles. The collection of sermons contained in this volume testify to his close knowledge of St. Paul's writings as well as to his deep admiration and attachment to Paul's many virtues. Reading them we can easily see what he meant in the introduction to his commentary on the Epistle to the Romans: "As often as I hear the Epistles of St. Paul read, twice a week, or often three or four times, I rejoice each time over this spiritual trumpet, and I exult and am kindled with holy desires, when I hear the voice which is to me so dear and familiar, and then I imagine that I see him before me, and that I hear him speak." The saint preached these sermons at Antioch sometime during his twelve-year stay there after his ordination.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKPreaching today is in rapid decline. Pulpits all over the planet are filled with ministers who gain a paycheck, but give little else. William Perkins explains what it means to be truly called to the holy office of the minister. He does this from two principle texts: Job chapters 32-33 with emphasis on 33:23, and Isaiah 6:1-13. Perkins says that the words in Job contain, “a valuable description of a true minister,” how he is a messenger and an interpreter, one in a thousand. Then, he explains Isaiah 6:1-13 of Isaiah’s confirmation, showing Isaiah was fearful, stunned, cast down, comforted, and renewed in his commission to go and be sent of God to preach for Christ's glory. He explains that men ought to consider the extreme presumption of those who rashly enter the ministry. Many ministers come into God’s presence unsanctified, and in their sins, little concerned about how loosely they live before their people. Perkins will not make the ministry an easy door to open. That is because faithful exegesis on important passages about the ministry shows it to be a hard and difficult road. Being God’s mouthpiece is not an easy task, but being called to it is an honor that is inexpressible. This work is not a scan or facsimile, has been carefully transcribed by hand being made easy to read in modern English, and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe last treatise written by the famous preacher St. John Chrysostom (d. 407), to strengthen his flock during a time of persecution. The theme is trust in the providence of God, not to get scandalized by troubles, particularly as they occur in the lives of righteous ones, but to wait for the outcome of events. Examples are drawn from the lives of saints of the Old and New Testaments.--Publisher.
