The growth of the Pentecostal movement is often most evident among the poor and disenfranchised of society, as, for example, among the Hispanic-American community. As this community continues to develop, will Pentecostal theology be able to incorporate into its hermeneutics those issues that especially concern it? Solivan looks at relevant issues to this debate from a Hispanic-American perspective, presenting an overview of Hispanic diversity, and its common roots and struggles. He talks of four critical issues in Hispanic theology (religious experience, suffering, the work of the Holy Spirit and the importance of language and culture) and other issues including acculturation and assimilation. He shows how a community's suffering and oppression can be transformed by the Holy Spirit into a liberating life, full of hope and promise.
Recently, scholars of global Pentecostalism have proposed that the experience of the Spirit among Pentecostals has elicited the development of a Pentecostal "theology of liberation," which has implications for understanding Pentecostal responses to social issues. These projects primarily explore the Pentecostal response to cultural issues in areas outside of North America and especially focus on Africa, Asia, and Latin America. This volume assesses whether the categories of social liberation applied to non-Western Pentecostalism characterize Pentecostalism in North America. A noteworthy theology of the Holy Spirit that challenges current scholarship in the field How might a distinctively Pentecostal and charismatic theological perspective inform and enrich the discourse of academic practical theology? In order to address that question, Mark Cartledge in this book probes the relationship between Scripture, experience, and the Holy Spirit by means of the concept of mediation — that is, how the divine is experienced in the world. In the contemporary biblical studies climate, proposals regarding the theological interpretation of Scripture are contested, particularly but not only because they privilege, encourage, and foster ecclesial or other forms of normative commitments as part and parcel of the hermeneutical horizon through which scriptural texts are read and understood. Within this context, confessional approaches have been emerging, including some from within the nascent pentecostal theological tradition. This volume builds on the author's previous work in theological method to suggest a pentecostal perspective on theological interpretation that is rooted in the conviction that all Christian reading of sacred Scripture is post-Pentecost, meaning after the Day of Pentecost outpouring of the Spirit on all flesh in anticipation of the coming reign of God. In that respect, such a pentecostal interpretative perspective is not parochially for those within the modern day movement bearing that name but is arguably apostolic in following after the scriptural imagination of the earliest disciples of Jesus the messiah and therefore has ecumenical and missional purchase across space and time. The Hermeneutical Spirit thus provides close readings of various texts across the scriptural canon as a model for Christian theological interpretation of Scripture suitable for the twenty-first-century global context.
Though the global center of Christianity has been shifting south and east over the past few decades, very few theological resources have dealt with the seismic changes afoot. God, Suffering, and Disability: A Trinitarian Theodicy of the Cross utilizes both Christological and pneumatological perspectives of Luther’s theology of the cross to address the complexities of suffering and disability. Through the lens of the cross, the God who suffers enables humans to “call a thing what it is” by recognizing the suffering that often accompanies disability. Rather than asking “why” the Triune God allows people to suffer, this theodicy of disability focuses on “where” the Father, Son, and Spirit are in that very human experience. As a new theodic construct, “a Trinitarian theodicy of the cross” responds to both the theological concerns of the church and the theoretical apprehensions of society. It encourages Christians to live as theologians of the cross, empowers the faith community by informing both its theology and praxis, and provides a theoretical response to secular society that will enrich the field of disability studies.
What would the church look like if Christians saw their lives as constituted by the Spirit's presence to live as Jesus lived? In a time when being "led by the Spirit" is defined more by achieving the "American Dream" than by Jesus's life, answering this question rightly seems all the more critical for the church to survive in a culture increasingly hostile to Christianity. Building upon the work of post-Constantinians John Howard Yoder and Stanley Hauerwas and upon the Trinitarian Spirit-Christology of Leopoldo Sanchez, this account of the Christian life provides a framework for seeing one's Christian life as one transformed by the Spirit to live in the resurrection reality of Jesus's sonship with the Father in the Spirit. David Trementozzi contends that conservative-traditional Christianity has uncritically adopted an intellectualist (i.e., rationally-driven) view of faith in its understanding and practice of salvation. Throughout, he maintains that an intellectualist soteriology should be rejected because it prioritizes the rational over other behavioral and affective aspects of faith. An intellectualist rendering of salvation is incomplete because human experience is neither abstract nor gnostic—it is embodied and experientially relevant. An intellectualist soteriology simply cannot account for the dynamic and transforming possibilities of saving grace. Salvation in the Flesh offers an innovative perspective on the embodied nature of faith and the centrality of the Holy Spirit in the Christian doctrine of salvation. Drawing from the cognitive neurosciences and psychology, Trementozzi argues for a holistic awareness of cognition to better inform an embodied understanding of faith.
