This report specifies special project objectives and methods of Alaska Department of Fish and Game's (ADF&G) 2017 Kodiak, Chignik, South Peninsula, and Eastern Aleutian districts large-mesh bottom trawl survey of crab and groundfish. This special project plan is used in conjunction with the large-mesh bottom trawl survey operational plan (Spalinger 2015b), which describes standard large-mesh trawl survey sampling. Special projects for 2017 include continuing a fishing power comparison between the R/V Resolution and the R/V Solstice, sampling shrimp and forage fish using small-mesh trawl gear in Pavlof and Chiniak bays, and monitoring sea stars for wasting disease throughout the survey.

"By examining a suite of over 90 indicators for nine major U.S. fishery ecosystem jurisdictions, Link and Marshak systematically track the progress the U.S. has made toward advancing ecosystem-based fisheries management (EBFM) and making it an operational reality. Covering a range of socioeconomic, governance, environmental forcing, major pressures, systems ecology, and fisheries criteria, they evaluate progress toward EBFM in the U.S., covering a wide range of longitude, latitude, and parts of major ocean basins, representing over 10% of the world’s ocean surface area. They view progress toward the implementation of EBFM as synonymous with improved management of living marine resources in general, and highlight lessons learned from a national perspective. Although US-centric, the lessons learned are applicable for all parts of the global ocean. Though much work remains, significant progress has been made to better address many of the challenges facing the sustainable management of our living marine resources"--Publisher's description.

This report specifies special project objectives and methods of Alaska Department of Fish and Game's (ADF&G) 2014 Kodiak, Chignik, South Peninsula, and Eastern Aleutian districts large-mesh bottom trawl survey of crab and groundfish. This Special Project Plan is used in conjunction with the operational plan for standard sampling (Spalinger in prep), which describes standard large-mesh survey sampling. Special crab projects for 2014 include: measurement of male Tanner crab Chionoecetes bairdi chela height to determine size at maturity and an expanstion of the South Peninsula survey to explore additional areas for Tanner crab presence. Special groundfish projects for 2014 include collection of stomachs and contents from walleye pollock Gadus chalcogrammus, Pacific cod Gadus macrocephalus, flathead sole Hippoglossoides elassodon, arrowtooth flounder Atheresthes stomias, Pacific halibut Hippoglossus stenolepis, northern rock sole Lepidopsetta polyxystra, and spiny dogfish Squalus acanthias for a National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) food habitats study, and a rock sole species verification project to examine the accuracy of current on-deck identification methods. Additionally, samples from multiple species will be taken for an archaeological comparison project being conducted by University of British Columbia (UBC) and monitoring of the trawl net will occur throughout portions of the survey using net mounted sensors.

The goal of the large-mesh bottom trawl survey is to provide fishery managers with current stock status information for Tanner crab Chionoecetes bairdi, red king crab Paralithodes camtschaticus, and commercially important groundfish stocks in the Kodiak, Chignik, South Peninsula, and Eastern Aleutian Tanner crab districts of Westward Registration Area J. The large-mesh bottom trawl survey utilizes a 400-mesh eastern otter trawl to survey these districts and provide crab abundance estimates, size frequency distributions, density estimates, and spatial distribution of commercially important crab and groundfish to support fisheries management.

This report summarizes results from the large-mesh bottom trawl survey that took place June through September 2022 to assess crab and groundfish resources in the Kodiak, Chignik, South Peninsula, and Eastern Aleutian Tanner crab Chionoecetes bairdi management districts. A total of 369 trawl hauls were conducted to assess relative abundance and condition of commercially important crabs, as well as spatial distribution, species composition, size frequency, and catch per unit effort of commercially important groundfish. Survey estimates indicated that mature and legal male Tanner crab abundances were sufficient to support commercial fisheries in 3 sections of the Kodiak District, the Chignik District, and both sections of the South Peninsula District. Red king crab Paralithodes camtschaticus abundance estimates in each of the surveyed management areas remain too low to consider opening a red king crab commercial fishery. Arrowtooth flounder Atheresthes stomias, flathead sole Hippoglossoides elassodon, walleye pollock Gadus chalcogrammus, and yellowfin sole Limanda aspera were the dominant groundfish captured during the survey.

This report summarizes results from the large-mesh bottom trawl survey that took place June through September, 2019 to assess crab and groundfish resources in the Kodiak, Chignik, South Peninsula, and Eastern Aleutian Tanner crab Chionoecetes bairdi management districts. A total of 367 trawl hauls were conducted to assess relative abundance and condition of commercially important crabs, as well as spatial distribution, species composition, size frequency, and catch per unit effort of commercially important groundfish.
