This book deals with a rejection of the widespread fakeries that have emerged in twentieth-century art, which we call by their Platonic name, sophistry. The book also presents brief descriptions of some of the ideas of Martin Heidegger and Nicolas Berdyaev as to what constitutes a beautiful work of art, and how an authentic relation to the beauty in a work of art enhances human existence.
This book has two aims. The first aim is a modest attempt to help to overcome the neglect to which German expressionist paintings have been condemned by historians and art critics. The second aim is more difficult from an educational perspective. The book points out that a moving beauty and worthy truths call out from many German expressionist paintings. At times, this beauty and these truths may be comprehended straightforwardly. To complement the direct encounter with these paintings, the book suggests learning from concepts, ideas, and insights presented by existentialist philosophers. The book shows that these concepts, ideas, and insights can assist in harkening to the call of beauty and truth that calls out from the paintings of the six German expressionist painters which are discussed here: Max Beckmann, Otto Dix, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Otto Mueller, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, and Erich Heckel. Thus, they can assist the educator in showing the grandeur of the works of the six painters. The book points to the educational value of the personal and existential encounter with the beauty and truths that call out from the paintings of these artists. Haim Gordon is professor emeritus at Ben Gurion University of the Negev in Israel. He has published, at times in collaboration with colleagues, 26 books and more than 150 papers in professional journals and books on philosophical, educational and political topics. He resides with his wife in Eilat, Israel.
This book shows how the beautiful landscape paintings of Meindert Hobbema, a seventeenth-century painter of the Dutch Golden Age, are in accord with the thought of Martin Heidegger, a twentieth-century philosopher, on beauty and truth. Since little is known about Hobbema's life, this work concentrates on ideas that are central to Heidegger's philosophy of art and beauty and the way these ideas are attuned to Hobbema's landscapes. Heidegger holds that the beauty of a great work of art calls out from that work and is firmly linked to the disclosure of hidden truths concerning essences of beings. This book illustrates in detail that beauty and such truths indeed call out from Hobbema's paintings.
The existentialists presented a philosophical approach which raised questions and illustrated ideas that addressed the grounds and essence of human existence. Among the questions were those that related to the essences of truth, being, human existence, freedom, and of love. The major purpose of this book, is the attempt to counter the expansive reign of the 'passion for the mediocre'. Sound and statuary have had a complicated relationship in Western aesthetic thought since antiquity. Taking as its focus the sounding statue—a type of anthropocentric statue that invites the viewer to imagine sounds the statue might make—The Sculpted Ear rethinks this relationship in light of discourses on aurality emerging within the field of sound studies. Ryan McCormack argues that the sounding statue is best thought of not as an aesthetic object but as an event heard by people and subsequently conceptualized into being through acts of writing and performance. Constructing a history in which hearing plays an integral role in ideas about anthropocentric statuary, McCormack begins with the ancient sculpture of Laocoön before moving to a discussion of the early modern automaton known as Tipu’s Tiger and the statue of the Commendatore in Mozart’s Don Giovanni. Finally, he examines statues of people from the present and the past, including the singer Josephine Baker, the violinist Aleksandar Nikolov, and the actor Bob Newhart—with each case touching on some of the issues that have historically plagued the aesthetic viability of the sounding statue. McCormack convincingly demonstrates how sounding statues have served as important precursors and continuing contributors to modern ideas about the ontology of sound, technologies of sound reproduction, and performance practices blurring traditional divides between music, sculpture, and the other arts. A compelling narrative that illuminates the stories of individual sculptural objects and the audiences that hear them, this book will appeal to anyone interested in the connections between aurality and statues in the Western world, in particular scholars and students of sound studies and sensory history.
In Gorgias and the New Sophistic Rhetoric, Bruce McComiskey achieves three rhetorical goals: he treats a single sophist's rhetorical technê (art) in the context of the intellectual upheavals of fifth-century bce Greece, thus avoiding the problem of generalizing about a disparate group of individuals; he argues that we must abandon Platonic assumptions regarding the sophists in general and Gorgias in particular, opting instead for a holistic reading of the Gorgianic fragments; and he reexamines the practice of appropriating sophistic doctrines, particularly those of Gorgias, in light of the new interpretation of Gorgianic rhetoric offered in this book. In the first two chapters, McComiskey deals with a misconception based on selective and Platonic readings of the extant fragments: that Gorgias's rhetorical technê involves the deceptive practice of manipulating public opinion. This popular and ultimately misleading interpretation of Gorgianic doctrines has been the basis for many neosophistic appropriations. The final three chapters deal with the nature and scope of neosophistic rhetoric in light of the non-Platonic and holistic interpretation of Gorgianic rhetoric McComiskey postulates in his opening chapters. He concludes by examining the future of communication studies to discover what roles neosophistic doctrines might play in the twenty-first century. McComiskey also provides a selective bibliography of scholarship on sophistic rhetoric and philosophy in English since 1900.
The Sophist sets out to explain what the sophist does by defining his art. But the sophist has no art. Plato lays out a challenging puzzle in metaphysics, the nature of philosophy, and the limitation of philosophy that is unraveled in this new and unconventional interpretation. The Sophist is presented now not as an artefact of the intellectual past or precursor of late 20th century philosophical theories, but as living philosophy. In a new translation and interpretation, this late dialogue is shown to be a defense of not a departure from Plato's metaphysics. The book is intended to provide a complete interpretation of Plato's Sophist as a whole. Central to the methodology adopted is the assumption that all elements of the dialogue to be understood must be understood in the context of the dialogue as a whole and in its relation to other works in the Platonic corpus.
Offers a new understanding of representational cognition that synthesizes postwar philosophical approaches to the question of objective knowledge This study develops a novel account of representational cognition, explaining how cognitive systems progressively come to map the structure of their worlds. Daniel Sacilotto offers a constructive response to the critique of representation formulated throughout the post‐Kantian philosophical tradition. Rather than a skepticism or idealism whereby thinking can grasp appearances but never the real, representation, Sacilotto shows, is a constitutive dimension of cognitive systems’ creative capacity to know and intervene in the world of which they are part. Structure and Thought: Toward a Materialist Theory of Representational Cognition integrates various lines in contemporary philosophy, including those often seen as incommensurable or in irresolvable tension with one another. Sacilotto thus advances a productive synthesis of a materialist ambition to provide a creative and historical understanding of cognition with a structural realist account of representation. He shows how the different forms of sensory, discursive, and theoretical mediation that characterize human cognition are conducive to a realist epistemological framework that explains how the possibility of knowledge about a mind‐independent reality is conceivable.
