Excerpt from Book of Prayer and Praise for Congregational Worship In some instances a choice of prayers and chants is offered, to provide for differences of feeling with regard to the use of certain phrases. The attempt has been made to exclude as much as possible phrases significant of those dogmatic beliefs concerning which people are most apt to disagree, and to keep only the language of devotion. While it is impossible to make an absolute separation between the thought and sentiment of any religious utterance, the committee has earnestly sought to measure the fitness of words chiefly by their power to express spiritual emotion. It is suggested that these five services be used in succession, one for each Sunday of the month. This would give a reasonable amount of variety, and would also insure that degree of familiarity without which no such formal service can be made a Spiritual exercise. No liturgy can be of great value till it has become a well worn pathway for the affections and aspirations of the heart, and has been hallowed by deep experiences and sacred associations.
