This delightful addition to the Smarter Than Jack series features a collection of animal escapades from around the world showcasing how audacious our furry and feathered friends can be. An Airedale terrier drags his embarrassed owner into a museum, and manages to get her a private tour. A parrot takes surprising revenge on unsuspecting family members. A canny calf makes a bid for freedom using his tongue. While keeping their people on guard, these creatures also take on their peers, as in the case of the determined ewe whose authoritative stamp frightens two pit bulls away from her lambs, or the Dachshund who figures out a way to trick her canine friends out of their food night after night. These 89 reader-submitted tales give first-hand accounts of just how nervy, impish, and clever our nonhuman companions can be. Proceeds from Sassy Animals will help humane societies across the United States in their admirable quest to improve animal welfare.

The five heartbreaking and radiant stories in John Fulton's The Animal Girl explore the awkwardness of situations in which grief and erotic love collide. Here are people in extremis, struggling mightily, and often failing, to keep it together. In the Pushcart Prize--winning "Hunters," Fulton contrasts the humorous clumsiness of dating with the grim realities of death in the tale of a middle-aged woman who keeps her cancer a secret when she starts a relationship with an avid hunter. In the novella-length title story, a lonely adolescent girl deals with the recent loss of her mother and the alien presence of her father's new girlfriend by taking out her aggression on her boss and on the animals she cares for in her summer job at a research laboratory. The final story in the collection, "The Sleeping Woman," delves into the inner life of Evelyn, a divorced professional woman who falls in love with Russell, a man whose wife is permanently brain damaged and has been unresponsive for years. The ghostly presence of Russell's wife haunts Evelyn as she discovers how her lover has been scarred by his misfortune and searches for ways they might build a long-term relationship in the wake of personal tragedy. These powerful stories approach the often sentimentalized subject of romance with tenderness and insight into the heart-worn perspective of characters who have failed at love in the past. In lucid, revelatory prose, Fulton navigates the complexity of both mid-life courtship and adolescent rage with humor and intelligence.

The relationship between humans and animals has always been strong, symbiotic and complicated. Animals, real and fictional, have been a mainstay in the arts and entertainment, figuring prominently in literature, film, television, social media, and live performances. Increasingly, though, people are anthropomorphizing animals, assigning them humanoid roles, tasks and identities. At the same time, humans, such as members of the furry culture or college mascots, find pleasure in adopting animal identities and characteristics. This book is the first of its kind to explore these growing phenomena across media. The contributors to this collection represent various disciplines, to include the arts, humanities, social sciences, and healthcare. Their essays demonstrate the various ways that human and animal lives are intertwined and constantly evolving.

One evening while lying on our sofa watching the news on our television, the story was broadcasted describing the torture of various animals. It made me sick. From that point on, I decided to sit down and write this book, How to Fall in Love with an Animal. Without going into great detail, I felt that it was necessary to be able to share my families personal experiences, even though some of them were very painful, but there are some that ended in a happy ending. My story is in regards to our happy animals alongside stories that are sickening and disturbing, from individuals who do not value the life of an animal. There is always someone to blame for this pain. We as human beings are more than capable of being able to love an animal. As a matter of fact, this book will help you believe that you can make your life more cheerful and comfortable when adopting an animal. I realize that in the world today there is so much hate and evilness that follows, and there is very little that I can do besides making monthly donations that will help aid in the rescue of thousands of neglected animals. I wish with all my heart that I could do more, and I hope by writing this book that it would inspire you and help you become a better person. The love we have for our animals happens to be displayed throughout my book. I hope this book will touch a soft place in your heart. Remember, animal life is not over until we decide its not worth hanging on to. We all must keep remembering that we are all children of God, whether it be human beings or animals.
