Excerpt from Bush Fruit Culture in California Bush fruits, especially the brambles, or fruits of the raspberry and blackberry type (see frontispiece), are grown in nearly all parts of California. The plantings vary from the few bushes cultivated for home use to plantations in which several hundred acres may be devoted to the production of enough berries to supply both local and distant markets with fresh fruit and allow a considerable portion of the surplus to be canned. Nearly all of the bush fruits are adapted to California soil and climatic conditions. Although some of the sorts are not grown extensively in the hot, dry sections of the state, even these may be grown in home gardens by judicious handling. With a succession of varieties, berries for the table may be produced throughout a long season. Bush berries are, for the most part, best adapted for growing in regions comparatively close to the consuming centers. They are generally consumed in the fresh conditions and must, therefore, be fully mature. And present an attractive appearance when displayed for sale. In some districts a considerable portion of the crop is preserved, or made into jams and jellies. Small quantities are sometimes dehydrated and sold as dried fruit. Probably the chief outlet for the commercially canned berries is the bakery trade, in which they are made into pies or tarts. This trade also uses a. Considerable quantity of frozen berries. In the latter case, the berries are fro-zen and keptfin the original container at a temper 'ature of about 20 degrees Fahrenheit until used. Berries handled in this way are said to retain more nearly the fresh flavor and aroma than those preserved in any other manner. Twenty years ago the amount of fruit produced was comparatively small, now the industry has attained a place among the large horticultural industries of this country. Then, at most, a few hundred boxes of fruit were produced annually; now the crop is counted not by hundreds but by millions of boxes. The pomelo was scarcely known and the lemon was a fruit imported almost entirely from the Old World. Then, the means of transportation closed many a desirable tract of land through which the railroad now runs and from which large quantities of fruit are now shipped. Then, the methods of combating insects and fungous diseases were less perfectly understood than now. In those days, the fertilizers applied to the soil were mostly made at home, now the nitrogen, phosphorus and potash, deemed so essential for the production of first-class fruit, in many districts, can be obtained as commercial commodities in any market. Numerous devices are now successfully employed in protecting trees and fruit against the effects of frost and freeze, then, nothing of the kind was attempted or in fact deemed necessary. Excerpt from Small Fruit Culture The average farmer's home in Canada is not supplied with an adequate amount of small fruits, notwithstanding the ease with which they can be grown. It is a common thing to see a farmer on market day buying strawberries and other small fruits in the town to be taken home and treated as a luxury, when he should produce in his own garden all that he and his family could consume if they ate fruit three times a day. This state of affairs seems to be accounted for mainly by the fact that the farmer thinks he is too busy a man to have and care for a garden. If the farmers of this country only knew how much better they and their families would be with a plentiful supply of fruit they might make a greater eflort than they do to raise enough for home consumption. There are some Canadian farmers, we are glad to say, who do have good gardens of both fruit and vegetables. The garden, which is usually on a well drained piece of land near the home, dries earlier than the fields, and can, therefore, be attended to before work begins in the field. A few hours' labour puts it in such shape that it can be cared for with comparatively little work during the summer.
