But he feels that those into whose hands it will come will accept it for what it is - a simple narrative of the wanderings and incidents of a long life spent in what was, at the beginning of that life, the very outpost of civilization, but which has become before its close the center of population, of wealth, of industry, of commerce, and of political power in our beloved country. In recalling the incidents and events of the past, and following in his memory the trail of his wanderings, he has been able to divert his mind from its despondent and depressed moods, and thus enjoyed, to some extent, the little life left in the old body.
