Excerpt from Twenty-Sixth Biennial Report of the North Carolina State Board of Health: July 1, 1934 June 30, 1936 In the seventies Dr. Thomas Fanning Wood, of Wilmington, caught the vision of the possibilities of public health work to North Carolina. How fully be grasped the far-reaching consequences of his idea, how clearly he saw the ever-growing hosts of lives saved as a result of his vision and inspira tion, we shall never know. We do know that the vision never left him, and that under its sway he worked, through the Medical Journal which he edited and through the North Carolina State Medical Society until his influence reached the people of the State in their General Assembly of 1877, with the efiect that on February 12, 1877, the North Carolina State Board of Health was born. Ours was the twelfth State board of health to be established. Without treating the development of the newly-established board with that thoroughness that could be termed history, we think it enough to set down here in chronological order the principal events in the life and growth of the North Carolina State Board of Health. The first regular quarterly meeting of the N. C. State Board of Health for the biennium beginning July 1, 1952-june 30, 1954, was held on Tuesday, September 9, in the auditorium of the State Labora tory of Hygiene, with President G. Grady Dixon, presiding. The meeting was called to order by President Dixon. Secretary Norton announced that Dr. Bender was kept away on account of illness and that Dr. Current was attending a meeting of the American Dental Association in St. Louis, Mo. Minutes of the Board meeting held on May 7, 1952 were approved as sent to the members of the Board by the Secretary. Secretary Norton further reviewed the status of the religious group which had been discussed with the Board previously, and read a letter from Dr. Hollis S. Ingraham, Deputy Commissioner of Health, New York, - a copy of which had been sent to the members of the Board. Dr. Hollis out lined the original intent of the existing law and clarified the amended law. He stated that although theoretically this concession to a special interest is highly undesirable, it does not appear that the law, if interpreted vigorously, should have an actual detrimental effect on public health.
