The workshop examined the following three questions: (1) What projections have been made by government agencies for the U.S. supply of and demand for natural gas over the next 10 to 20 years? (2) Where are the current natural gas reserves and resources? (3) By what means and by how much can future reserves, resources, and production be increased?

This report examines the factors which affect gas supply in the short term in the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin, and presents an outlook for gas deliverability in 2004. The main objective is to advance understanding of the short-term gas supply situation by examining recent trends in the production characteristics of the Basin and applying these trends to a short-term forecast. A historical review of natural gas production & drilling activity for the Basin is also provided. The outlook is restricted to conventional supplies, with analytical results in terms of initial productivity and production decline rates of a typical connection. The outlook does not assess the potential for development of coalbed methane or tight gas, and does not include withdrawals from storage reservoirs.

This volume examines energy security in a privatized, liberalized, and increasingly global energy market, in which the concept of sustainability has developed together with a higher awareness of environmental issues, but where the potential for supply disruptions, price fluctuation, and threats to infrastructure safety must also be considered.
