This compact field guide, based on Birds of Seychelles by Adrian Skerrett, Ian Bullock and Tony Disley (Helm 2000), is the only field guide to cover every species recorded in Seychelles. The plates are based on the authors' previous work, but with the addition on many new images. The text has been completely re-written and revised for this edition, and the plates have been re-worked to accommodate a number of new additions to the country's list. There are now 12 more plates than in the first edition.

They Seychellois economy continues to recover from the effects of the pandemic but at a slowing pace. While tourist arrivals were about 91 percent of prepandemic highs and activity in the IT, construction, and fishing sectors was robust, real GDP growth slowed to about 3.2 percent in 2023. This is due partly to a complex disaster (flooding and an industrial explosion) in December and associated negative impacts on manufacturing. Inflation has been negative since May but appears to have troughed in December. The fiscal stance in 2023 was tighter than projected and, as a result, the ratio of public debt to GDP is moving more quickly back to pre-pandemic lows. The external position improved slightly relative to the previous year.

Wallace's Island Life is one of the foundation works of zoogeography. It focused on the detailed problems of animal dispersal and speciation. Like Darwin, Wallace classified islands as either oceanic (no previous connection to a land mass) or continental (previously connected to a land mass). He considered the means by which each class of island might become colonized, the types of animals most likely to perform the necessary migrations, and the conditions-such as major climactic or geologic change-under which the migrations might have been made. Wallace was the first to use the new knowledge of Pleistocene ice ages to explain certain phenomena of animal distribution, and in Island Life he speculated about the possible causes of glaciation. He was one of the few 19th-century scientists to realize that astronomical causes alone would not suffice, but had to be combined with a corresponding elevation in the northern land mass -- Abe books website.
